Office politics

I enjoyed a recent report on CNBC Africa about office politics in companies in America saying that the majority of employees would leave a company if a suitable job was available due to office politics. When the number is that high, one has to think that perhaps the problem really is that people struggle to get on, when working closely together for any lengthy period of time because after all, a marriage is also work and more than two-thirds of them also end in divorce!

In my own experience, and this is a generalisation, the more petty aspects of office politics generally arise with one’s younger staff, and one’s older, more experienced staff who have worked at other companies previously generally have less time for office politics, don’t really get involved and don’t have as many issues with it. It may be because they realise that the environment they find themselves in is to a large extent, although not always, of their making or within their control, and there is no particular reason to get terribly worked up about it, or indeed to make it difficult or unpleasant. It probably helps to have a healthy balance of staff in a company across a wide ambit of ages and for people to take a mature attitude to the working environment, because you are after all there to work and not to have problems that often relate not so much to the work but social issues.

People should learn to keep their personal dislikes about themselves away from when they need to start working together on something. Others just think that they Gods gift to mankind, and oops there is something you lack that the next person has and you dont.

I think that it doesn't matter what you do or how hard you work, sometimes people simply just don't "click" maybe it is just a personality clash . . the key is to act mature and know that this is work and not home . . office politics arise when that person intentionally causes unnecessary and unwarranted drama to stir.

It's also a good idea to keep your personal life and work life separate. Don't take your work home with you and don't bring your home to work.

I think this is a great topic you brought up. I think wherever you go, there will be some sort of office politics, some small and some fairly bigger. Maturity levels do play a big part and I'm pretty sure that if you have a ton of work to get to, that you won't have any time for office politics and that you simply won't show any interest.

Most problems arise from different types of people, from different backgrounds who work a certain way clashing with one another, until eventually you learn one anothers working patterns and how to deal with each other on a professional and personal basis. it normally and eventually sorts its self out when one does not take everything so seriously and just focus on the work at hand

I agree that office politics are more social than work related. However, people need to realize that respect is earned, and in a working environment respect plays a big part. But, if you cannot act your age and mature, then you will have problems with everyone you work with.

i agree with you Alexis it all depends on how you handle situations.

i agree, you have to have a healthy balance of staff in a company in order to create a possitive working enviroment

I think the huge issue is people whom think they are better than everyone else. People who like causing problems instead of solving problems. Favoritism and pretty much a persons personality towards other staff. We are all in the same boat and are all (well most of us) working hard to get the end results we need. It is very petty and very childish as this is a work place not a social hang out. People need to PRIORITIZE :)
