It is very good to see more products sold without sugar and I have previously written about the benefits of gum for children. Research shows that when children get their second set of teeth, at around 6 or 7, that chewing gum at that time is extremely beneficial for the teeth and leads to children having teeth that are ultimately much stronger and have fewer cavities.
That is of course only if it is sugar free gum and that is the benefit of sugar free gum with Xylitol. Watching people chewing gum all day can be irritating at times, but if its young children its healthy for their teeth and all that they need to invent now is a gum that automatically throws itself away when it is finished being chewed on and is not left sticking to a floor or hair on small children!

I agree with Juliet .I also enjoyed sugar free gum with xylitol but after reading about the side-effects of aspartame I'm more wary of just chewing away. The packaging also usually states that over-consumption can have a laxative effect :-(

Gum isn't good for you whether it's sugar free or not

I think I should buy the sugar free gum because I like chewing gum and if the flavour lasts longer it will also be much better to buy the sugar free gum.

I think it will be good for the little ones because it will prevent the cavities at an early age.

While this all sounds good and beneficially for a child's teeth, I will not allow my child to chew gum. A good toothbrush and good toothpaste can do the job to keep my children's teeth fresh, white and cavity free.
As long as they don't chew with an open mouth and then try and have a conversation with someone at the same time.

The poor dentists!!!. If we all South Africa are "chewing" there won`t be any need for dentist. Please educate the people to through it in a dustbin after been finished chewed.

I can't see how chewing gum is good for children teeth. Children chewing gum always ends up in disaster. I will keep this in mind when my nephew is around and gets a bit older.

If its healthy for their teeth and beneficial for the teeth its a definitely yes, its nice to have white and strong teeth with fewer cavities from the early stage.

Lol @ Angelique's comment only because I too fell asleep with gum once as a child. It ended up in my hair and pajamas. What a mess!

I don't think children chewing gum is so bad as some people choose to believe.
As long as yes , its sugar free. I myself only eat sugar free gum.

No matter how good it is for the teeth, I don't think I could recommend it because ultimately its going to either be swallowed or put in someone's hair. As a child, I fell asleep with gum in my mouth and woke up with it in my hair. Needless to say my kids will not be chewing gum, no matter the benefits.

I have a habit of always having gum in my bag. I do agree with Juliet though. It's as if you are lying to your stomach. Lol...

I never liked chewing gum and always discourage my children to eat it as well as my grand children but this puts it in a different perspective now I will encourage them sugar free though.

This is very beneficial to know especially with nieces and nephews of around this age.

I would never encourage my children to chew gum because the chewing action sends a message to the stomach which then produces acid which waits for the chewed food to arrive. When no food arrives, the acid eats the stomach lining and causes ulcers. The other thing is one should check for aspartane as most chewing gum contains this except the Woolies one.
I only use xylitol for my coffee, no sugar.

I can see how gum would be good for the teeth for children but I always worried about how gum also affects the stomach though.

I have never been much of a fan when it comes to gum for the specific reason that some people chewing gum do so with a camel mouth. Yuk

I have heard that it is beneficial to children to have them chew gum. Sugar free gum's flavour also seems to last much longer than chappies or some of the sweeter chewing gums.
