Paying the price for a declining currency

The petrol increase for July is going to see us really paying the price for a declining currency.  Those who gleefully support our uncometitive labour laws, generous sick leave and all the other things that frighten many companies from doing business n South Africa can pay up and not complain.  Those things go hand in hand with a declining currency which is a sign of an uncompetive economy and unfortunately those who always criticize employers and the like just don't seem to realize that.

At the moment we are looking at an 84 cent increase in petrol next month and somewhere down the line an increase in everything else.  Transport costs will go up, that will push up the price of food and basics and it will all filter down to an increased inflation rate in a few months time.  I have written before how important the currency rate is to all of us, as well as making our country more compettive, and the price increase we are about to see at the petrol pump is going to be a shocking reminder of that.  Currency rates don't just affect people who take overseas trips or buy luxury items - they affect basics like fuel as well and that in turn affects everything else.  Which in turn will lead to more strikes, followed by a slump in the currency, increased fule prices - it's a vicious circle people, and we as a country need to stop it.

This is sad news and worst of all when the price drops it doesn't even drop so much as the increased price..... I agree with Lourien how does one afford a car and on top of that the petrol that goes with it......

The economy is affected by more than just labour laws just as a hike in the petrol price will not stand alone. And the economy, like a business, will never be perfect.

I don't fully agree with your first few sentences, but yes no one likes the petrol price going up.

And I completely agree with Sorea. Would be great to read about some good news.

I really wonder how we will survive! This is just ridiculous and scary. How much more we will pay for the same loaf of bread. The necessities will soon become luxuries. I never really follow the exchange rate but yesterday I got a shock of my life when I was online shopping and realized the rand to the dollar is R9.99, this morning I woke up to it being R10.08 as on google. Guess there goes that online shopping hobby of mine. Good bye Bebe :( and hello Mr Price/PEP. On a serious note something drastic needs to happen!! Viva A New Government!!!

I'm even frightened of doing business with the defendant attorneys they are so chocking to deal with! As a whole this country has poor infrastructure, poor governance and a complete lack of accountability coupled with a few tons of greediness and voila! The people will pay! It's only a matter of time that Zuma stands on his balcony at Nkandla and declares. "Let them eat cake!" Or maybe, "Let them eat pap!"

But please let's all remember, South Africa is a COUNTRY on Africa, which is a CONTINENT

Lourien  said:

I don't know how people can still afford to buy a car and actually have to pay the same amount in petrol... The price needs to come down... never mind every thing else...

South Africa used to be the most serious and economically successful countries in Africa. Sadly our country has been on a downward slide and was harshly judged some time ago by overseas newspapers as "the hopeless continent". I do believe however that our country does have what it takes to claw its way back up, it just needs to be managed correctly.

Lucretia  said:

Why is it that African countries cannot grasp this. Why is it that African presidents just want to be presidents regardless of whether the country is successful or not. Is it not logical to want to be "in charge" of a successful organisation than to just be "in charge". I would rather not be a president than be a president of a failing country - maybe I am not logical???

I think I will join Kaylee on her walk to work! Not really, I guess that there is not much that can be done but for us to take it in and deal with it. Tighten the strap on unnecessary expenses so that we may can afford the insane cost of petrol.

Kaylee  said:
