LinkedIn

LinkedIn is clearly campaigning, far more actively now, than before and I am getting bombarded with e-mails from people who want to connect with me on LinkedIn. Motley Fool selected LinkedIn as their share of the year for 2013, although it has been essentially flat for most of the year. The argument is basically that they are going to take over from employment agencies to a certain extent and to another extent have become the hunting ground for employment agencies in the United States who all pay various fees to LinkedIn. You also, by paying LinkedIn a nominal amount of R400/R500 a year, get extra services. In some respects LinkedIn seems a another variant of Facebook – although far more serious.

I would like to know from readers of the blog as to how they use LinkedIn, differently for example to Facebook, and what they believe its relevance in South Africa is – so it is really some market research for me, but I would appreciate your opinions on LinkedIn, whether you are on it or not, and what use it has been to you as well as what you believe its future role is likely to be.

Working in a recruitment agency we used LinkedIn on a daily basis to post job advertisements and to scan for suitable candidates. The site is career orientated as opposed to other sites like Facebook which is a social interface. LinkedIn supplies one with what may be considered equivalent to a summarised CV of the person as well as a photo. The thing about LinkedIn is that it is a series of "links" where if you connect with one engineer, for example, you are then exposed to his/her connections and therefore have more exposure. There are degrees of connections though so for example, if I connect with Mr Smith, he is a primary connection, his connection Mr Donald, would be my secondary connection and my access to his information would be more limited then my access to Mr Smith's. So if I wanted to know more about Mr Donald I would send him an invitation and if he accepted he would then become a primary connection and I would have greater access to his information. The site is really great for networking in a career sphere specifically recruitment and for people to apply for jobs etc

Have received invites but never accepted any. Will start using connecting now because it seems like a good way of communicating .

I have always deleted invitations to same. However, based on some of the comments, maybe not a bad idea to accept the invitation and see what it is all about.

I have only joined LinkedIn recently and I haven't really had the chance to spend some time on it but I also think it is more professional as where facebook is personal.

I like LinkedIn , I have been able to get connected with people I once worked with and also their posts are really nice. Simone's point is very valid ,people of the same industry connect with you according to your profile , which is set up like a simple curriculum Vitae

However, you need time to sit on it and go through everything so its not really that useful of late.

I would say that linkedin is a more of a professional recruiting site where as Facebook is more of personal site

I use LinkedIn as a way to keep in touch with the professionals I meet. But, I must be honest, I have not updated contacts and such in quite a while.

I have not used my Linkedin in ages, I do however still get my notifications and it is truly amazing how you can get back in touch with people who you have not seen / heard from in ages. Regarding the use of Linkedin in a professional manner, I have recently heard numerous adverts where recruitment specialist advise you to ensure that your social media is "clean" as it is not always just your interview that a possible employer will look at. Always something to bare in mind when posting comments / photographs etc.

My facebook is locked up to most whilst my LinkedIn is open and I have always sent it as a link to what is essentially on online CV and place to connect on a professional level. I love the changes they have made to the profiles as well.

I receive many invites to LinkedIn, but to be quite honest, I haven't had time to accept and check it out.

I think LinkedIn is quite awesome. You get to connect to a lot of people in the same industry as you are. You get to upload a lot of information regarding your work skills and knowledge. Kinda like a very detailed Curriculum Vitae.

I think LinkedIn is a valuable tool.Social networking is the way of the future and LinkedIn is the way of the future for all employers/employees. I have many friends who have been head hunted on LinkedIn and been approached with opportunities that they may not have been exposed to should they not have had a LinkedIn account. Its also valuable for employees to conduct background checks of prospective employees and to also obtain more information about the person. If enough info is loaded on their account it basically replaces a CV. I personally connect with other colleagues in the legal industry.

I actually didn't know about LinkedIn until this year... It does seem to be 'Facebook' for the Corporate World though lol... For companies to see your skills, I also think that adding it to your CV could prove useful to whoever would like to hire you.

I personally think employers first option to check out is facebook - you can tell a lot about a person on facebook than on linked in. I don't think many people really use linked in or take it seriously but perhaps I'm wrong. I'd look up what extra services they offer but I am not really interested in it - I guess it may help if you were unemployed you never know. I'd use linked in on a more professional level once I have further education because it could be more useful and could use it on my CV as a link for an employer to get a more full and detailed report/information on my previous employment etc.
