Sunscreen shows results

This is the wrong time of the year to write about the latest research on sunscreen – it being winter, but recent research is interesting nonetheless. Essentially, on a study involving 900 white people aged 25 to 55 in Australia, a test was done on the skin of people over a 5 year period and you can read the full article at this link: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/03/slathering-on-sunscreen-shows-results-researchers-find/ . This is the first test actually done with people, as opposed to mice, and that is another topic altogether, and it was basically on people who were already using some sun protection – in other words, they were not the worst offenders who ran around without hats or no suntan lotion in the first place. Results indicated better quality skin for those who used sun tan lotion all the time compared to those who used it now and then.

They made silicon casks of their skin at the start of the study and five years later the results were that those who used an SPF15 factor every single day had better quality skin, which had aged much less and although they have not tested it on darker skins, they believe that the theory will hold true for them as well. Apparently, in a biopsy it is easy to see the effects of skin damage with those who don’t have it having nice pink fibers, and those who have been exposed to too much sun having a purple and amorphous material which the researchers say is almost like looking at a photograph taken by a camera lens covered with Vaseline.

I'm really bad when it comes to sunscreen and sunblock. I should use it more often. Rieman P is really good though.

You only need to look at older people to determine who uses sun protection lotions and who does not. I have always used a skin moisturiser that has an SPF factor in it. If I don't put moisturiser on in the morning, my skin feels dry and burns. I can only imagine on those days, how much damage the sun will do as well.

Its really a myth that sunscreen is only for fair people, I learnt that the hard way. I wear a little bit of sunscreen in winter under my foundation - that apparently has sunscreen in it. You can never be too careful.

I agree that sunblock is a must. You can use it either as a moisturiser or use it under your day cream. Especially in Sunny South Africa with its extreme UV rays, a SPF sunscreen is necessary to protect our skins against skin cancer. The statistics show that the big C is increasing rapidly. Its priority to use sunblock.

So many good advises on the forum, really had fun reading the thoughts. Thank you

My skin is too pale to allow me to lie in the sun for a tan. And when I am in the sun I burn blood red and then it does not even have the decency to go brown before it returns to its default white, so I always use a good SPF40/50 if I have to be in the sun.

You only have one body and it is your responsibility to look after it. As Brumilde said I don't know why people still need proof that sunscreen works. If you don't take precautions you will be sorry one day.

I have never been a lover of the sun or summer in general. I do my very best to avoid the sun altogether so I would say that I am safe. This would be an interesting article to share with those few who lay 'unprotected' for hours in the sun on the beach... It may be good to be tanned but is it really? I think not...

I don;t know why people still feel that they need to prove how good sunscreen is... really think we all know by now

Look after your skin and health BEFORE you are too old and the damage is done

Tanya knows the lyrics of a song it seems :). I am terrible with sunscreen, I probably have used sunscreen maybe twice ever. But I will probably age badly, so I should consider using it, although everyone has been telling me for years!
