Oscar Pistorius trial and coverage

We have had more than a week of coverage already between not only the international media and the local media but also new channel – Channel 199. I’d love to know what the what your opinion is of what you’ve seen on the channel so far, what you like and what you don’t. I think it’s been an eye-opener for a lot of people were not aware as to what goes on in a trial in from that point of view it’s been very good. It’s also been running fairly slowly, with lengthy breaks, and delays and one wonders how long this trial is going to last – it could easily be 3 months.

What I haven’t enjoyed about the coverage, is it when I get home after work I do actually like to see more made of the highlights of what happened in court rather than to see a bunch of talking heads discussing what happened in court. It’s very hard to believe those talking heads, when in some instances you know that for example they are not criminal advocates or people who have actually been judges in South Africa. In other words, somebody is introduced as an advocate of the Johannesburg Bar and who is an expert presumably on this area and you know full well that normally when he or she is in court, they are actually dealing with the Road Accident Fund matters. It’s not going to affect the man in the street, who believe that person is an expert, and compared to the man in the street they said they probably are, but for me it’s just a little bit hard to believe when I know the person is certainly not an expert in that area.

I do not have DSTV so automatically have not watched the channel. From the updates on radio and other TV channels it is going to be a long trial. Indeed it has been an eye for most people.

I enjoy the channel. I can catch up on any details that I have missed through out the day. I also like that they point facts out to you as to how some things work and what happens in some instances. It is very interesting. Sometimes what the people have to say at the table is sometimes interesting and helpful but most nights they do not interest me at all.

It was very interesting in the beginning. I sat watching it for a long time as i was intrigued by how a trial is run in our country. But now i don't watch it anymore as it is a bit long winded and i find myself getting irritated by witness statements. I do however stay on track by reading the headlines and listening to the radio just to keep updated with proceedings.

I love watching this channel. I have mixed feelings about this. Sometimes I think he is innocent and other times I think he is guilty.

Oscar'd out and neither have DSTV nor SABC, nor do I subscribe to any newspapers, so haven't really been following the trial. Only hear the brief snip-its on the news on 94.7 Highveld Stereo. Though I do enjoy the conspiracy theories!

The interest in this matter is phenomenal. I have had to explain the procedure and the bench compilation to so many people already.

I think the channel is a complete success. But let us just enjoy it for now, we do not now need to make it a permanent channel broadcasting future court trials. Everything in moderation. Let's face it this is the most interesting thing on TV at the moment. The most interesting and relevant. It has been extremely informative for people who don't know about the law, the court processes etc. I like watching when I get home from work they show the highlights and a quick discussion. I guess if you watch it all day it would seem drawn out and have long breaks. Just watch for an hour or two a day then you won't be bored. Also, you cannot expect the best experts specializing in each field to be available daily to comment on proceedings and evidence. We should just enjoy the opinions we receive and process them as we wish and as we always will as humans.

You can watch or record the "court in cession" live, 1st starts at 10:00 and again i think the 2nd cession starts at 14:00 on DSTV Channel 199. I watch it every night and it is quit interesting but also boring some times. I also agree with Rob, my money is also on Gerrie Nel to put Oscar away. He is calm now but i have heard that when it comes to the defense witnesses, he is much worse than Barry Roux in cross examination.

I think it's very interesting to watch two highly respected Advocates battling it out. My money is on Gerrie Nel to put Oscar away.

His INNOCENT, just kidding I have seen a little bit but we cannot go anywhere or speak to anyone or put the radio or news on the its all about Oscar!! Seriously getting bored now,

The only positive I see in all this is the publicity our country is getting and tourism will be booming the next couple of years, Mandelas deaf and now Oscar.

I haven't been watching the channel. Mostly because I haven't sorted my DSTV out yet. I know a few friends that have been glued to their screens and the radios, listening to the trial. I agree with Kaylee that it's been an eye opener for many who don't know much about the law in their own country. I have been asked numerous questions about why the judge never questions the witnesses herself, the lack of the jury system, the 'strange' manner in which everyone calls the judge "my lady". I think it's great that everyone can now have a better understanding of how SA's judiciary system works as opposed to America's which we so often see on TV.
I also agree with Elektra that it is annoying that every 'legal expert' wants to give their 2 cents worth. I'd also rather watch it live.

A lot of information is still going to unfold as we are still in the infancy phase of trial. It is going to be interesting to see how everything unfolds. A lot of focus has been placed on Oscar's crying, gagging and breaking down in court. I read an opinion of a criminologist which was very interesting. She said that tears do not necessarily indicate remorse. Sometimes murders break down and cry because the reality of the devastation they have caused themselves sets in. Whether or not Oscar is truly remorseful is something only he would ultimately know and a decision the judge is going to have to make.

Don't have dstv, not big on television, so I cannot comment on Channel 199. I have been listening to 702 though as and when they change over to the trial. What I have heard makes me sorry not to have channel 199, however, I enjoy listening to the comments on 702 made by the layman regarding the trial. Interesting to say the least.

I have been watching the channel 199 it is quite intense to hear all the stories and put piece by piece together of what really happened that night. I must agree with Kaylee it does get a bit much after a while.

Regrding the T.V Channel 199, I have stopped watching it, Due to every Tom, Dick and Harry making as though they know everything on the matter trying a quick route to put their face on Television and everybody adding their 2 cents worth on the matter, I would much rather watch the in Court process live, instead of someone else explaining what happened on the day. I personally am disappointed in the channel, especially after the major hype end extent they went to make footage live and the channel available to the public. Not impressed.

I have not watched the channel at all however I have been following News24 and Skynews for updates. I do believe that highlights are always better that having someone report it to you. This trial and the fact that it is live is a first for South Africa and is quite similar (not the details of the murder) but to that of the OJ trial.

I see him getting off due to a technicality, he still killed her, he should still pay for his crime. I don't even listen to it, so tired of hearing about this trial
