Somebody else can say it

Sometimes you want to say something publicly, but you think it might seem a bit harsh or unnecessary and you certainly don’t want to offend the media.  It is always great in such a situation when somebody in that organisation says what you think.  I used to love listening to certain commercials on radio stations, listening to music, the charts, etc, and of course there is a part of me that would grow out of that, but there was another part that was put off, as radio became a lot more of simply presenters reading out of the latest gossip magazines as to what Kim Kardashian and her husband are doing – which is perhaps for males, or perhaps just for me, extremely boring and of no interest – I am really listening to a music station because I want to hear music and possibly would be more interested in what album is about to be released by a pop star than the comings and goings of the various people who have used amateur sex tapes to build a name for themselves.

Gareth Cliff leaving 5FM led to some amazing, but very honest comments in the Sunday Times as part of an interview he gave and what he said of 5FM is that, “People talk about content, but if you distilled 5FM down to 2 hours, you would find station ID’s, DJ’s saying their own name, saying nothing interesting to callers and going ‘thanks for your opinion’ you would probably be left with about 10 minutes of real content, most of which, at this point would consist of DJ Fresh’s laugh … but nobody has to be captain to this dull, unimaginative world that FM Radio’s become.”  Maybe Gareth Cliff is also getting old, but I just got to a point, many years ago, that I could no longer listen to the absolute nonsense that the presenters talk and they really are not of the calibre that they once were, whether that was Alex Jay or Mark Gillman, who was hated by many listeners because of his commentary on the South African political scene.  He did tell me, during a chat that I had once, when he left 5FM, it was because he could no longer identify with the young audience and maybe that is why I don’t listen and maybe that is why Gareth Cliff is also moving on, but I still think that it is not just because we all are getting older, but because that particular station really has changed.  It is not as if I want to listen to music of the 80s and 90s – I like modern music, I just don’t want to listen to drivel.

Gareth Cliff was very entertaining and I enjoyed listening to his show while driving to work in the mornings, but the presenters they currently have talk about the things that many people have absolutely no interest in. I have now resorted to listening to my own music in the car.

I hardly ever tuned to 5 FM or listened to Gareth Cliff slot but mostly 94.7 especially the pranks. I have to agree there is very little music being played on radio and mostly they repeat the same songs over and over. The other remaining time it is irritating gossip which I do not what it's purpose is because clearly it's not entertainment.

The only radio show I listen to is 94.7 in the mornings for the prank call but I used to listen to the radio all the time-even until late ino the night. I don't do that anymore because I cant stand the music of nowadays-it has no content.
I love sad, depressing music -music that has the ability to bring a tear to my eye or that tells a story but its extremely rare to hear that kind of music on the radio now. The only music I hear is a senseless mix of words that evokes no emotions and has no a story to tell.

So I have now resorted to listening to 702 when driving.

So sad that lately it is to much talking on the radio station. And DJs will choose few songs and play over and over a day. I think that is the reason have created my own collection on my phone and MP3 player. Only one programme I will listen - Breakfast express with Derek Simpson. Such as pleasure to listen to his shows.

I don't like listening to 5 FM especially when they are rude to the people that phone in. I like listening to 94.7 of Jacaranda. But I think all radio stations can play more music and talk less!

I used to listen to the radio constantly but since it became more about peoples opinions and gossips instead of the music and the news, its lots the attraction for me.

I like listening to radio now and again but most of the time I really get frustrated with the same song being played 10 times in one day.... There's so many music and when there is a new song you will hear it at least 4 times a day for 2 weeks, and I agree some of the stuff they talk about really is boring. My fav of course is whacked head you just gotta love that guy and when in traffic and it's whack head time you actually see a lot of people laughing, you just know what they are listening to.

I love 94.7 in the mornings. I love that they guarantee to make you laugh before you get to work. I hate the ads on the radio and even the songs that are repeated every single day. So if I want to listen to music I would simply put a cd/usb in with all the music I enjoy listening to. If you really want a station where there is more music than talking 93.8 is quite a nice station.

This is really a blog I connect with. I really cannot handle the drone of the radio DJ's talking about absolute rubbish all day. I skip between 94.7, 98 and Jacaranda all the way to work and then back so that I can maximize the music I actually get to hear which is so limited because all the stations play are the DJs talking and laughing some idiotic laughs, adverts, and stupid games. I hope Gareth Cliff gets ahead but he did also make some stupid comments while on air. But he does seem about 90% more intelligent than Anele and DJ Fresh so if they are content then I can imagine someone of his intelligence would not be. Jacaranda's DJs are the best of the lot though. They actually comment on relevant issues and give listeners news about interesting things not like Anele who is always asking so how many people have you slept with? Call in and tell us ha ha he. It's not funny. You are just stupid.

I must admit that I do like the Fresh Drive. DJ Fresh is always playing the best music and their topics aren't too bad.
The adverts annoy me. That and when they speak about nonsense is what makes me change stations or play a CD instead

I dont listen to radio much and have lost my liking for it. Ignorant DJ's who think that their opinion is always the only way of thought, rubbish gossip of who wore the same dress twice and the same songs playing every day just ruined radio for me. I prefer to read news24 and listen to the music on my phone.

The radio is usually just background noise while I drive or cook. Have unfortunately never really liked Gareth Cliff's show and listened to Highveld for the most part. When the presenters and advertisements become too much while I drive I connect my phone and car stereo so I can listen to the music on my phone. Technology is as such today that you really do not have to listen to any show if you don't want to.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gareth Cliff, and will be following his 'new thing' with keen interest. I think DJ Fresh is a cretin of the highest order - i cannot listen to him. I must also be getting old - I actually spend most of the time in the car listening to 702...

It was the constant nonsense on 5 fm and the same music being played over and over again on Highveld that got me to listening to Radio 702 a good 15 years ago already. I find the DJ's of late extremely annoying and often insensitive. The skit Darran Simpson played during the Oscar trial, using Gerrie Nel's voice and playing some song, "don't shoot down my......" was a slap in the face of Reeva's parents, to say the least. I was most disgusted.

To add to my comment earlier, I also agree that they are playing way too little music and talk too much. I must be honest by saying that i mostly listen to my own CD's as I think the radio stations are getting old aged.

I loved listening to Garrith Cliff in the mornings to work. He was very straight with who ever phoned in and gave his honest opinion and also was not shy to do so. I really miss his morning shows and 5FM is definitely not they same without him. I also listen to the Fresh Drive in the afternoons but I agree, it to is getting a bit boring and i am definitely not getting old. I like listening to modern music. Oh, what has happened to 94.7? Did Darren Simpson also leave the breakfast show or is he on leave?

To be honest I have never enjoyed Gareth Cliff, the sound of his voice even use to irritate me, he is too opinionated and flat out rude. I love Dj Fresh's laugh it is awesome and puts a smile on my face. So YAY now that he is gone I can listen to 5FM again.

Jade  said:

I don't think I can be considered old, but I feel like the Fresh Drive on 5fm has become dull! I tune in to listen to music, and all I hear in the 30 minutes of traffic home is DJ Fresh's laugh. This is something that has been bothering me for a while.
I think a channel that just played music with no one talking would be great.
