Sandton gets ready for Mall of Africa

The Mall of Africa is the biggest single phase shopping centre being built, and is to open within the next year.  It is obviously being seen as quite a threat to many other malls, particularly with its closing time set to be 9pm and others are already beginning to change their hours.  Tenants at Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square have for example been told that from 1 April they have to keep their shops open until 8pm whereas until now it has only been 7pm.  Competition does that, but I think it must be quite hard for companies to try and balance the needs of employees as well, because working until 8pm every night is certainly not easy and if you have young children it essentially means you will not see them because they really should be in bed by the time you get home.  On the positive side, the Wallmarts in America are generally open 24 hours a day, so they must look at these suggested 8pm closing times as almost a day off!

Hopefully this mall is as good as they claim it to be because this country is wasting unnecessary money on things like this and not fixing what really needs to be fixed to make the citizens life better. There needs to be more focus on budget spending on things such as Economic and Development building , Infrastructure , Road fixing and so forth. Let's see how long this mall keeps its shine

This is quite conflicting, as you mentioned working so late would make it difficult to see your family etc,but on the other hand great for the consumer, as weekend are just too short to short I never manage to see the people I want to and get round to additional errands that i had planned for that weekend. So it has its Pro's and Con's.

I think that all these malls that are going up are a waste to be honest. We have the Mall of the South going up by us and honestly, when new malls go up, the older ones eventually become white elephants. I know competition is good but really, having so many malls with similar shops, is it rally competition.Does South Africa really have the economy or "spending power" to sustain all these malls or are we just wasting money???

I have to agree with Jade weekends are so short, and extending the hours will be great, hopefully the consumers won't be in such a rush to get to the shops before it closes anymore.

I feel really bad for the people who work in retail the long hours of standing and then the hours are being extended you do not have anytime with your family because you work on weekends as well and now you get home later. But you need to put food on the table so you will do anything to work that hours. Cant see that we need more malls.

I am sure they will have their staff work in shifts. I am excited about the longer hours, weekends are incredibly short and with the amount of errands I have to do, people to see etc. it would be helpful to get birthday present shopping etc. out the way during the week. It makes sense as most people work until 5.

Great! Another mall, complete with large intimidating windows and constant neon signs buzzing, droning on and on with displays of Sales and Specials.

Society has become self-mutilating circus in which we have painted ourselves clowns. Women prowl 30 stores in 6 malls to find the perfect cocktail dress, but they havent a clue where to find fulfilment or how to wear joy. Wandering through life shackled to a shopping bag beneath the tyranny of those two Pret-ty syllables.

Sounds good to me, except I do feel sorry for the people who will have to work longer hours... But a new shopping spot is a bonus ;) Getting tired of the old ones ;p

I love the hours of the mall because we work until five and usually everything is closed by the time we get home

hopefully one can buy something not at rip off prices if rand gets weaker.
and it is still time consuming to trail the shops for a dress or pair of shoes. internet shopping is easier but then you do not know how it will fit you etc so that is downside.

I would think they would have 2 shifts for the employees eg 9am - 3pm and then 3pm - 8pm so it is not such a long haul, anyway I think there are labour laws to prevent such a long day. I hope the mall has some normal shops that average people can afford and not only expensive boutiques. I haven't even heard of this which is quite shocking for me....where is it exactly?

Durban malls stay open until 7pm during the week and 9pm on weekends and considering there are only 3 malls and a population of about 1 hundredth of JHB it has always baffled me how JHB malls close so early. I mean Fourways mall closes at 6pm. Impossible to go there quickly after work. I always support Spars as they close at 8pm

It sounds like it can't even compete with Sandton! I agree with Kaylee when you work til 5 the shops are never open unless you rush and theres no traffic so its a great idea that it will be open for longer. Midrand residents are surely excited. It sounds like they will have every single shop imagined in there. I'd definitely check it out!

Retail is tough when it comes to the type of hours you are expected to put in. A lot of malls are going up at the moment and one has to wonder how it is going to balance out if at all. Where I live we have
Alberton City on the one side and The Glen on the other. But both malls have new malls being built right on their doorsteps. One at the old race course near Alberton City and another close to The Glen, The Mall of The South. Great for job creation not so great for business for existing malls.

Sounds interesting, would love to go and take a look, its good to have a mall which is longer hours in which it makes life easy for people who do not have the time to do all their stuff during the weekend..

Awesome, i wanna go see it, Sometimes you don't get time on weekends or you have forgotten someones birthday you can always go there and Shop its awesome. And one plus side job creation

Kaylee  said:

I love the hours of the mall! I can understand that it must be hard to work those kind of hours, but those hours are great for me as a working person as I do most of my shopping there after hours. I generally don't have time during the weekend so its great to pop over there after work.

Daria  said:

Working till 8pm is really hard for people but on the plus side it creates more job opportunities for those who need it.
