SA lose in the World Cup semi final

Another World Cup, and another defeat. I think our players did their best, even if they were not at their best - I don’t think that their bowling upfront was fantastic.  I certainly think, just as was in the case in Australia. 20 years or so ago, that we were robbed by the rain. Our players really were in a good position to smash New Zealand all over the park, with 12 overs to go, and were suddenly told that the only had 5.  A far higher score, which would have been far harder to chase down was certainly going to be scored, and so we once again got very unlucky with the weather.

We still had our chances, and the bowling upfront to the New Zealand openers was not good enough, with the result that they got smashed all over the park and New Zealand achieved the highest successful run chase in a World Cup knockout match. To make it worse, at the end of the day we lost the match to an all rounder from Johannesburg, who apparently had struggled to make the Transvaal team and had then moved to Griqualand before going to New Zealand.

All credit to him, Grant Elliott, showing that if you are passionate enough about something and you believe in yourself and you keep trying, you will eventually succeed – from Griqualand to Man of the Match for New Zealand in a World Cup semi-final. He is not the first talent that we haven’t recognized on your nurtured properly in South Africa and we have lost talented players to many other countries over the years, and many other sports as well.  He was cool and collected, while everyone else panicked, and he took the game away from us when it finally looked like it was ours.  I don’t feel devastated, I do feel disappointed and I guess it becomes tough to watch the same thing happen every 4 years and to then build up all your hopes again. Our batsmen were fantastic, but if I take out Morkel and Tahir, I can’t say the same for bowlers.  Cool heads in the last few overs may have seen a run out or a catch that could have changed the whole match, but, it was not to be and despite that, I can’t say that I blame them.  I enjoy the description on ESPN cricket “Oh what a night.  We will never forget it…..Vettori squeezing out a Yorker in the for four in the final over, Elliott ending it with a six, the tears of Morkel, the roar of Elliot, what would this World Cup be without this match?”

It was a good game right to the end. It kept everyone on their toes... It is really sad that we had to lose but it was well played. Better luck next time I guess

It sounds like our team played very well it's just that they were unlucky to win the World Cup semi final

The cricket team should not be allowed to take the family with on the tours, that distracts the players - and takes away their focus. Other than that , I think we performed well but the point is we lost , we should try again next time with better plans in place

We should have chosen to bowl first, chasing always makes you work harder.

They tried their best and have come far for that we can be proud of SA... It would've been nice if SA won... maybe next time.

I used to be an avid cricket supporter but was disappointed far too many times when SA "choked" over and over again. I must say I am far less stressed and far less disappointed now that I do not watch cricket.

I start to follow up on Cricket this year and I can say this game is interesting to watch, sad that I missed the game today because of being at work, but probably will see highlights tonight and will get more idea what this block is about. Sad that SA team lost was holding my thumbs for them.

Regardless of the fact that we lost it is always so nice to see how South Africans get behind our teams. This game certainly had one on the edge of the seat, crossing fingers and toes. It is sad to be out but at least we got as far as we did! Something to be proud about

I think our sports people, like all of our citizens, are disadvantaged by stress. You may think they are successful sports people but just that little extra stress of life that the South African sportsmen have to endure by living in South African and not being nurtured, puts them at a disadvantage to other international sports people who are looked after by their governments even if it is psychological it does affect the game. Like everything and everyone in SA, they are not taken care of and eventually it all falls apart. No wonder everyone keeps leaving

I love sport and having quite a sporty background, and having played in the girls cricket team in school, I was quite shocked that AB de Villiers elected to bat first. I would have thought, in my opinion, that it would be better to chase a score than to make a score that can be chased.

If AB rather elected to field first, this game could have ended more joyfully for South Africans. The Protea's were doing so well and this loss has left South African's quite disappointed.

i don't follow the cricket at all and i have no idea what it is about, all i see is a person hitting a ball coming towards him and the other people try to catch it, so i have no clue about it.

so sad.

I, for one, am sorry not to have seen our boys win. I got up early to see some of the game and we were doing a sterling job, at one stage I was worried "is this match fixed" with all the silly missed catches from NZ but, once again, our boys failed to go further - and again by no fault of their own. The rain Gods definitely have it in for SA. Other than that, I am proud of our boys and carry the Protea name with high regard.

Edwin  said:

One difference abbot for filander would have made all the difference he is the form man upfront

When we play series against then in 2 years probaly smach them 5-0
