The power of an enduring brand J&B Met

The J&B Met is an example of the power of an enduring brand.  The best evidence of the fact that it is so effective is that we still mention their name even though the race is no longer the J&B – they are not the sponsors anymore!  They however sponsored it for so long that people like me still think of The Met as the J&B Met.  It is really the best horseracing day in South Africa and overshadows the excitement of the July Handicap and the Summer Cup.  The July is a busy day, it has some very close races, but I don’t think the racecourse has as true an a track as the one that you find at Kenilworth and I far prefer the crowds and the people in Cape Town and the way they dress to the crowds you see at the Durban July.

The bottom line is that the Cape’s most famous horserace, which is on the last Saturday of January every year, is now sponsored by Sun International.  They will have to sponsor it for a long time before we can forget about J&B who sponsored it for 39 years and that really does show you that a brand name cannot be built up overnight and it needs to be sustained with consistent advertising, promotion and good work over many years until it reaches the stage where people like me incorrectly identify the race, which truthfully should simply be called The Met, with a brand which no longer sponsors it.  Incidentally, J&B is marketed in South Africa by Diago SA.

It is definitely true that brand names aren't built overnight. It takes a lot of investment and effort to produce consistent results which people can rely on and begin to refer back to. Although some promiscuous people can get a name overnight!

Branding, its all about emotions. Whatever you and your team decides/d your new brand will stand for, deliver on that promise. Thats the only way youll ever control your brand. And that is the only way the brand will live on long after it has changed or died.

Good name doesn't die easily and if they were good sponsor of such events the name will never die to some people.

It won't be easy to use the new name after how many years of calling it the J&B Met. It like calling a person by his name say John and after 39 years he decides to change his name to George, it won't be easy to use his new name. I've never been to the Met and maybe one day I'll have that chance. Enjoy it.

I know it as J & B Met if someone has to say to you want to go with to the sun met I will be like uhm what is that. Funny how names change and you stay with the name that you know

The subconscious mind is a very powerful think and once something is implanted in the subconscious, it is very difficult to rid of that memory. It is true as you say, that it will take a few years for the the new sponsor make name for such a big event and before then, J&B will always remain at the tip of Track Fans' tongues.

That being said, I will most definitely place a bet on a horse this year and maybe just maybe I will be lucky enough to win a few extra Rand.

That is so true, people do tend to call things by what it was and not what it is now. I am also one of those people. I actually really wanted to go to the Durban July, it looks awesome to could have been there but now that you're saying the Met's are better I need to evaluate my opinion. Then again everything in the Cape is always better.

It will always be the J&B Met to me, I recently actually saw that its called the sun met now. That sounds weird to me, I much the J&B Met.

That's awkward, I didn't even know that J & B are no longer the sponsors of the event. I must admit though, like Alexis I still call places/events what they were first called and it's just what sticks. It will take people a while to start using the new name as it literally has always been the J & B Met and one will find themselves having to consciously remember to not call it that anymore.

I think it will take a long time before we make the dissociation. 'The Met' is probably one of the most popular horse racing events, apart from the July, hence the great public interest. It is easier for the knowledgeable punters to make the dissociation earlier, as oppose to the ignorant public

I must admit that I also always would look at it as the "J&B Met" and it is going to take some time for people to even realize Sun International is the new sponsor - even though it is a significantly bigger sponsor in my opinion. If you are ever lucky enough to go to the Met just make sure you are dressed the part!

I haven't been before, it sounds like an extravagant event. It just shows that a brand is something that takes time to be established and J&B sponsoring such an event for such a long period was a big success and a clever marketing move!

I will really LOVE to go to the J&B Met.
I think it's great to see live and will be an awesome experience.
My whole life I have been very interested in horses.
Its the most beautiful and elegant animal with powerful movement.
I think it will take some time for people to call the J&B Met something else.

The one day my friend said: "Come down to Cape Town for the Met" and only afterwards I realized what he meant.. I would loooooooove to go down - even just for the weekend. It would be so exciting!

Wow I did not even know that J&B are not the sponsors anymore....
Its true that it will take a lot of advertising, promotion and good work ,then only people will start identifying The Met as the Sun international met

Old habits die hard....I still call the Brightwater Commons the Waterfront to this day. I will most likely refer to The Met as the J & B Met for some time, even though I do not watch horseracing....but it is what is engrained in a person
