Recycling and garbage

There is a tremendous effort by many people, including my wife, to distinguish between what is recycling and what is garbage and put them in the separate bins.  I think it is tremendous – we can all help the world in terms of reducing rubbish as well as recycling where we can.  Having said that however, I must say that I repeatedly run into problems trying to understand what is meant for recycling and what is garbage and some of the things are not always clear-cut.  In particular, the signs on rubbish bins or on packets I think need to be a lot clearer and a lot more obvious with specific colours indicating that something is garbage and another colour indicating that something is for recycling.  To try and work out the two a lot of the time is just too confusing for me and if it is too confusing for me, I am sure that many others struggle with the same problem.  If you want something to take off, you need to make sure it is absolutely obvious, understood by all and that the symbols and/or colours make it very clear what it is.

Recycling will be come more popular as the people starts to relies that it is crucial and that it will help to reduce the garbage that is always increasing. We need to be able to recycle more and more products to be able to make sure that we will be looking after the world and our selves not wasting all our recourses and using products over before just throwing them away.

This is something all of us should be doing, but aren't. I actually feel guilty reading all these wonderful comments of a lot of you recycling, I think I need to focus on doing this at my home as well.

In our neighborhood the recycling system is fantastic, every week we receive new recycling bags and the bags that you have filled then get placed outside the gate and they are collected. It really is impressive to see how many people in our neighborhood recycle and how well the system works. I do my best to try and recycle but sometimes I'm incredibly bad at it, one thing I do need to work on...

I think that if each person grasps the concept of recycling, we would not be in such trouble with the eco system. But unfortunately, the majority of the population could not care less about the environment and throw their garbage where they deem fit. The government should in fact implement a recycling system and who knows, we may be able to clean up our streets.

The municipalities should place recycle bins in residential areas to. The smaller towns including where i stay i have never seen one recycle bin anywhere but then again the streets are clean so they may not think its necessary.

We recycle at home. However, we keep our own separate bins for tin, plastic paper etc and then transport it to a recycling centre ourselves and it is a mission. Perhaps they can start by at least coming to collect your recycled goods when they do general rubbish collections.

A lot of people have started recycling at home and one of the reasons are because homeless people come dig in their black bags for plastic bottles ect and just leave the rubbish on the floor. Recycling has made it easier for them and prevents them from getting sick too.

I always feel bad when I throw something away in the dustbins and there ae recycling bins next to dutbin-but I just find it too confusing to figure which bin is for which product. maybe I should make more of an effort ;)

I really think those recycling bins are quite a mess sometimes as a lot of people do not even try to make sure they throw their things away in the right bin. I really believe if everyone does their part we can really make a diferrence through recycling. It is great seeing some people go the extra mile.

Yes, I think we need to help this planet as much as possible and prevent running out on necessary resources by recycling. Problem is that eventually people becomes lazy with recycling because you always have to distinguish between what is recyclable and not. Teach your children from a young enough age to get that in their daily routines too.

Recycling in South Africa is a bit of a schlep, I think it they made it easier, more people will actually do it. I was in Europe a few years ago and it was then already a huge thing there, the different bins is everywhere.

Nikita  said:

This is certainly something that should be taught from a young age. If we had more of the youth becoming avid recyclers it will become a way of life and save the environment. I agree it is difficult and we need to be educated more on what we can do to help out. Its the small changes that make the difference.

We have the same dilemma in my home so, for now, we only separate the plastics and tins for now. We have two dustbins and everyone knows to separate the "garbage" from the plastics/tins. In our area, our counsellors have raised funds to put the colour bins into the schools in order to start teaching the children who will hopefully take their skills home with them.

I know in Germany you will pay huge fine if the rubbish is not recycled properly, the municipality will refuse to come and collect your black bags! This rule will be great to implement in South Africa! I know in grade 4 kids are learning about how to recycle and the important reasons of recycling, but sad that municipalities did not implemented recycling in all areas!!

This is a good thing to help the world in recycling rubbish.the Problem is that people will not take the time to sort everything out they will throw everything in one bin.

We recycle a lot at home. I have found to use the empty margarine tubs to store left over food in is much more convenient than to have to go and spend money on more Tupperware which is unnecessary. We also use the 2L bottles to store water in for cold water or to use when making juice for the kids.

Recycling used to be a big, now days I hardly see people recycling There used to been bins at shopping centers and at schools etc. People have busy lives these days but if you got a system going I think it could be easy to start recycling.

When I was at primary school the school got a recycling bin for paper. I think that is a great way to start teaching the principal of recycling to young children. The mall that was built in Heidelberg also have the different bins for recycling and they are not at all confusing. They have marked their bins clear and anybody can identity between the differences. It is very important to recycle, but maybe we must first get the people of South Africa to first actually put the rubbish in the bin as to just throwing it on the streets.

We have recycling rules in our estate. On Mondays the trucks come to pick up your recycled good of which each has its own colored bag, and on Tuesdays the trucks come and pick up garbage in the usual black bags that have not been recycled. It's surprising to see how many people actually recycle if you leave on a Monday morning and see all the different types of bags outside.

Recycling should be encouraged on all fronts and particularly within the JHB CBD - Herman Mashaba could place large coloured bins in around town. Apart from killing off our resources, there are financial kick backs for recycling! We should all try and do our bit - even if it is as small as using both sides of piece of paper.

I also struggle to identify and for us its not easy to separate because we have one bin let say you put garbage inside the bin and maybe recycling inside the plastic people who are collecting they will leave the plastic and take the bin only.

I also think signs and colours on packets and or on rubbish bins can help to differentiate the two ,as to which one is recycling and which one is garbage

Recycling makes a huge difference you don't even have to spend money on different bins you can literally divide the bin you have into sections with either sheets of metal or even cardboard and then people can't use the excuse of it being expensive.

Recycling is a cleaner South Africa, I also dont always know what is recyable and if they can have bins all over indicating what goes where it would be much easier for all of us and we all will get into the habbit.

This is a wonderful way to look after our environment and to be responsible, however I do agree that the whole system should be unified and made simpler and I am sure that many people would join in and be eager to recycle!

I have seen many people do this and take my hat off to them. I would like to start but in our country there are no recycle bins and no one collects them. There use to be far more. I even remember in school it was a competition who would bring the most recycled items and drop them in the different bins. The government need to make it more accessible for the public and easier for us to take part in. Then implement them in schools and teach the kids to do that. I do understand we cannot just rely on the government but if there are no recycling bins or facilities, it really makes it more difficult to get into a habit. And then to explain which products are waste, plastic etc, like you say definitely are not always clear cut. In any case, if I were confused I'd probably end up putting it in waste.

I'm pro recycling but I just find it difficult to do in South Africa. There used to be a lot more recycling bins than there are now (in my area anyway). Without the necessary facilities and follow through it can make recycling very difficult. I was once behind a garbage truck doing their collections and the waste for recycling was tossed into the back of the truck along with everything else. If SA is to take recycling seriously, it needs to be convenient and managed properly.

Using these types of recycle bins are a great idea and definitely a bonus for the environment. I think people should learn children from a young age in which bins garbage etc. must go in. But it is true when I myself get confused where I must through my stuff in I will just use the normal garbage bin, instead where I could have recycle something.

Sinead  said:

Recycling is a brilliant idea but it's so difficult to keep up with it. Especially if you are not at home or where recycling is actually implemented. That's why people don't actually end up recycling.
I completely agree with you. Signage needs to be clearer! Pictures and illustrations always seem to help.

Recycling is a very good idea, and considering how much we pollute this earth as it is, we should give back where we can. It is a pain deciphering at best as to what goes where unless it is obvious...but still, it is a very good idea

Recycling is very good I think if everyone helps recycle the cities wont look so dirty. I know at a zoo there is always recycle bins to teach children not to liter as its harm full for the animals but if only they would put recycle bins everywhere, that would help a lot

I think recycling should be made mandatory in South Africa, i know overseas it is, yes allot of people will moan, but like everything else once they get into the habbit of it its all for the best.
