Rhinoceros Success

Rhinoceros Success is a book by Scot Alexander – a book that should have been written by a South African, but is written by an American.  It has sold more than 3 million copies around the world and it is a very short and fun motivational book.  He basically says try to be a rhinoceros and not be a cow.  He says cows run away from bad news, bad markets and problems and rhinoceroses don’t.  I am not sure that we all need to be a rhinoceros charging over everybody else, although it does work for some people, but the one part I do like is he says you need to imagine that you have the skin of a rhinoceros - in other words, a thick skin.  You have to understand that of course people will criticise you, or as he says you will have torpedoes aimed at you.  He says you must imagine your skin is so thick that you hardly feel them.  Sure, they will knock the breath out now and then, but you will be right back on your feet and ready to keep running.

It is important for us, because one has to develop a thick skin and I can assure you that the more successful you are, the more you stand out from the crowd, the more you will be criticised.  You have to embrace and understand it and although at times I do find it is hurtful, I try to remember this.  The book says, “The more successful a rhino you become, the bigger the torpedoes.  That’s OK.  You are a thick-skinned, mad, charging rhinoceros and the torpedoes will run out before you would ever go back to being a lazy old cow in the pasture.”

You are going to come across offensive and hurtful people and comments in your life and it is important to be thick skinned. If you linger on every hurtful thing that's been said or done to you, you may doubt your self worth and your abilities. The trick is to believe in yourself and dismiss people that try to tear you down, you have the capability to be successful despite anyone who tells you otherwise.

I feel you will be criticized no matter where you go in life or how much you have succeed. But some stuff shouldn't be taken to heart even though it will get you down some times.

The first piece of advice I received when I started my career was to have a thick skin. Sensitivity and emotion does not belong in the workplace and certainly doesn't help many situations. I think this is especially true as a woman in these times. Many think woman are irrational and impulsive beings and in most cases this is the case. However, in my own experience I have learned that having a thick skin changes how you react to situations and in turn allows you to have a more thought out and rational outcome.

It sounds like a good book to read. One must really learn to take criticism and learn from it in stead of take it as an insult and continuing the way you do. That criticism sometimes just might help you improve and if not, you do not need to have sleepless night over it.

This is a book that I must read, I can learn a lot from it. Having a thick skin is something I really need to work on. I know it is a must in the business world and having the ability to have a thick skin is something I haven’t mastered as yet but I intend working on it!

I think that a thick skin is extremely important, when I just started at de Broglio one of our Advocates told me that all you really need to get by is a thick skin. My reaction to criticism is not always good but it is something that one has to work on, you simply cannot survive and be successful in the world, be it the business world or just life in general,if you do not work on improving your reaction to criticism.

This book sounds like a very motivational reading. I cannot agree more to the quote in the last paragraph of the blog. People will always try to knock you down as soon as you succeed better in life than they are. Never give up and always try to do better even if you think you did enough at a certain stage.

THE best piece of advice that I have ever received was: "What other people think of you is none of your business." Period. Once an individual realises that their happiness, success or prosperity is not contained in the opinions of others, THAT is the moment that said individual with not only survive, but, thrive!

Sounds like a good book to ready, I feel like in today's life you have to have a tick skin and not let criticism get you down but some people need to take a step back before reacting to criticism Figure out whether the criticism is constructive or simply rude? It is sometimes helpful if someone criticise you, it can motivate you to proof them wrong or maybe the criticism was actually something to think about and will help to better yourself

Very interesting blog and sounds like a fun book to read. I love reading motivational books. In today's society you can not be with thin skin and very sensitive, only thick skin will survive in "jungle". I like this Quote:
“Charge with rhinos, fly with eagles, run with cheetahs, and eat with lions. Don’t hang around with cows or sheep.”

I cannot agree more with this blog! Unfortunately you will not get anywhere without having a thick skin. It is such an important life skill that I came to learn over time. The more sensitive you are the easier people can hurt you and interrupt your path to success. I will have a look out for this book!

Situations people face can force them to thicken their skin, I believe that even if you have thick skin it doesn't necessarily mean you are heartless but that doesn't mean you should be a push over either. I think we should stand firm in what we believe and this book could definitely assist everyone in finding strength to do so.

Would like to read this. I am one that doesn't take criticism lightly. I think its just human to not enjoy criticism. I don't think anyone likes it but you do learn from it.

Sounds like a really good book to read. It's a good thing to have a thick skin now and then, this will prevent people from walking over you. I always say if people don't have respect for you no matter how old they are then you don't respect them at all. This is what makes me a stronger person at the end. I am definitely a Rhino!

Sounds like a good motivational book to read, especially if you find yourself being a bit sensitive to criticism and not being able to take it with a pinch of salt. I do believe that we all need to have thick skin, unfortunately there will always be judgement - whether you are doing bad or good. One will never ever please everyone, so just do what makes you happy and strive, you will be judged anyway.

I do like the tag phrase; ' The Secret to Charging Full Speed Toward Every Opportunity'. I fully agree with this sentiment and feel that every opportunity should be embraced. Opportunity favors the bold!

I truly believe that having thick skin is essential! You should never live to please people because at the end of the day they will always criticize you no matter what. most cows are unresponsive, indolent, and shiftless. I would much rather be a rhino!

Sounds like a great self-help motivating book which we all need to hear every now and then. Those words are true you definitely need to charge and find a balance in your life with every aspect. Once cannot take criticism too personally but at the same time step back and try and take in something from the criticism. If you feel like the world is against you perhaps remember to have that tough skin and just let it wash off your back. Successful people are always amidst controversy or under extreme criticism - all for a reason. Definitely sounds like an influential book.

Everyone should have a thick skin. People are cruel and loves to judge and criticise and I'm not excluding myself. My mom always told us never try to impress people, if they don't like you the way you are they should take a hike, in my eyes you have a thick skin if you let criticism flies over you.

Alexis  said:

Sounds like quite an interesting book. I agree with you in the aspect of not having to be one, but to at least have thicker skin. The world is a harsh place as it is.
