Buying “The President’s Keepers”

I know a lot of PDF versions of this book are floating about.  I do think it is the wrong way to read the book or to “support” any author. Authors and publishers don’t make money out of illegal copies of a PDF and quite frankly, with the book not having being banned, there is no reason to circulate the book at this point.  It does not look like it is going to be banned either, although there will probably be criminal charges against the journalist Jacques Pauw.

The book has become the fastest selling book in South Africa since they started collecting data in 2004 and I discourage anybody from reading the PDF version when the book is available on the shelves.  It is certainly a book worth reading, I have finished reading it after having bought it on my Kindle, and I can only say it is just one revelation after another and if only 20% of it is true, and of course there is reason to believe a lot more of it is true, then South Africa is not in a good place at the moment in terms of Government bureaucracies, the weakening of the police force, the loss of talent and capacity in the South African Revenue Services, etc.

There are so many allegations and they are not just all about President Zuma – including the fact that for example it is alleged that even after he became President he continued to receive money from a well-known horserace owner, Roy Moodley, of R1 million a month for another 4 months after becoming the President, etc, but there are just revelations as to all sorts of breakdowns in the police, agendas, etc and I hope everybody involved in politics in particular is reading it and trying to work out where the problems are and what needs to be done about them.

I'm not really into politics but I would certainly want to read the book. Illegal downloads are taking over movies, books etc.

I must say, I first had the pdf copy and wanted to keep it because I did think the book was going to be banned. However, when I found out it was not, I bought a copy. I don't always get to read as often as I like but, I will certainly not be shelving this one until I am finished. I cannot talk much about it, at the moment, because I am only where the author has gone to Russia to meet with Paul aka "double-spy". I have set aside time 3 book by end May and I am really hoping I get to finish them all. Hopefully the current leaders of every party have a copy and learn from it.

When a book of this nature hits the shelves, and, in light of the fact that the Author has received a number of death threats, I do not see the harm of a PDF version (or eBook) circulating social media. The idea is surely to enlighten and inform the general population of the shenanigans at foot? I'd like to imagine so. Citizens should not remain uninformed of the status quo, simply because they did not purchase the book.

I still haven't had a chance to read this book. My mom has a copy of it and it most certainly is on my list of things to do this year.
No doubt there is truth in the book if there might be criminal charges against the author! Why else would they feel so threatened? Rather the truth be set free than live in darkness forever. It is a huge risk for someone to expose those mentioned in the book, but rather we know about the political activity.
In my opinion, if one does not want to purchase the hard copy but wants to donate to the cause, there should be a site or donation box where one can add to. Just a thought...

I have not yet read the book, but my mother in law brought the book. She did wait long though apparently there is a long waiting list because the book is so high in demand. Definitely a book I want to read.

I agree. People should buy the book if they want to read it. The author took a risk and I'm sure it took a while to do. For his time and efforts he should be compensated.

I literally saw this book in every book shop`s window this holiday. I bought a few books over the festive season but I just couldn't get myself to buy this book. I will probably borrow the book from someone who already bought it.

This holiday was hoping to start reading the book but no luck. I think it will be a good read, I only heard good stuff about the book.

I was hoping to find this book for December while I was home, but what makes me sad is after reading this book nothing is going to be done to the president and his keepers. To me they enjoy seeing the South Africans suffering on their name and his name.

With all that can be said in the media about the president and his cabinet. Reading the book gives one quite an open mind as to what it all entails.

It is absolutely imperative that South Africans continue to buy the book. This will not only show support for Jacques Pauw for enlightening the nation but will also be an indication of South Africa's disdain relating to the findings.

I agree that everybody who is able should buy the book even if they have already read the PDF version. Its important for us to keep the momentum that Jacques Pauw started going. One way for us to continue to stick it to this government is to keep the sales of the book up.

The allegations made in the book are of public interest and while downloading or receiving a pdf of this book should be discouraged, it remains important for the citizens of South Africa to be informed of the wrongdoings and questionable activities of our leaders and political figures.

I was trying couple of book shops and I am still on the waiting list to buy this book, my friend though give this book to read. It is very depressing to see how much money is stolen from people. I really hope that this book maybe can change something, make changes for better.

I do agree that buying the PDF Version detracts from the authors efforts and obviously has a financial implication on the Publishing House, but if it is the only way to become informed about a matter of such magnitude then it may be forgivable. The retail price of the book at the moment is R279.90.

I am not a fan of stealing from any brand or anything like that, if you can't afford the original version or item, then my opinion is that you go without it. It is not fair on the author or brand to steal from them, at the end of the day it is their living and the support should be there if you want to benefit from reading the book/wearing the item etc. That being said, this book has been extremely controversial, of course because it is exposing our president and his unlawful behavior! I say, go Jacques Pauw!

Alexis  said:

Definitely a book I would like to get and hopefully as you say - the rest will read and learn from the mistakes made and possibly sort out the issues we face

I personally would still love to read this book, I feel that it is really important to remain politically aware and understand what is going on in your own back yard.

Ashleigh  said:

I can only imagine what this book contains. Its just that politics are just too much now. I have read so much politics and debates over the holidays on social media that it makes one very annoyed and depressed and nothing you read or what you have to say will change it.

Clare  said:

To be truthful I have not even opened a book for a long time, I'm not one that enjoys to read. If they make a movie about this then I will watch a movie. I do agree with Anna why do you want to depress yourself with this story it only make you anger and hate the President even more and there is no point.

Anna  said:

Personally I haven't bought the book and I don't care to read it. Why burden yourself with more doom and gloom than necessary? I enjoyed a couple of James Patterson and chick lit novels over my festive season break and I found it far more relaxing than reading about the true extent of thieving and pilfering our esteemed President has been involved in.
