The United States get the World Cup again

It was interesting to see that the United States, where soccer is far more popular than many would imagine, has once again won the right to host the World Cup Soccer.  The World Cup they will host, easily beating Morocco in the bid to host, is to be held in 2026.  This time it will be held in conjunction with Canada and Mexico, but you can rest assured that the final and the most important games will be held in the USA.  Soccer is a far bigger sport in America than many South Africans believe - just as many don’t really appreciate how big rugby is in Japan.  A number of major cities, like Seattle, have their own soccer teams that regularly fill up stadiums with 50,000 or more people and while the quality is obviously not as good as that of the English Premier League or EPL, it has been growing in leaps and bounds.  The USA soccer team is in any event rated higher than the South African team, so we must be careful before we are too dismissive of their ability to play soccer!

I'm sure the USA will make it an spectacular event. One thing I will watch is the opening and closing ceremony. That should be one for the books. Hopefully it's not a situation where you expect a lot from them and then they don't deliver.

I can only imagine that the World cup hosting will be a spectacular affair. Russia did a great job but I am certain the USA will be capable of topping it.

Very Interesting, The US will then be the 6th country to host twice and also they are expanding the tournament featuring 48 teams up from the current 32-team tournament.

It is not surprising that Americans are just as into soccer as anything else. Americans always do things big. My younger brother has been playing for clubs in Arizona since he was in primary school and wants to continue to do so in University next year and play professionally... it is his whole life and the dedication that he and his fellow team mates have is always quite remarkable to me. It is certainly more so then in South Africa, however to be fair...soccer isn't an actual viable career here in S.A

I have never been particularly interested in soccer, but it seems strange to me that the US is hosting a football world cup. The US is extremely passionate about all their homegrown sports, American Football and Baseball so hopefully this passion will flow through to the football world cup too.

Events like these people take it as money making opportunity well and fair but I like the vibe togetherness from all over the world love, kindness, no colour of the skin, no race just togetherness.

I for one do not believe that South Africa has good soccer teams. Our Rugby team is also becoming something of a Bafana Bafana team.

I have not watched a local league of the USA's soccer teams play that's why I would underestimate their capability but they are at times the underdogs in sport.

I am also not a very big Soccer fan. But I enjoy the vibe people have when it is time for the World Cup.

Wow, this is great news for United States, these types of evens brings a lot of tourists and cash flow in the country.
The 1994 FIFA World Cup was the 15th FIFA World Cup, held in nine cities across the United States from 17 June to 17 July 1994. The United States was chosen as the host by FIFA on 4 July 1988.

I'm slightly confused by this.. so, did the United State of America win the bid for the 2026 World Cup, or, did Northern America, as a continent win the bid? How will it be in conjunction with Canada and Mexico. Besides, won't there be a Trump Wall between USA and Mexico by that stage?

I wish i could get to a point where i get excited about soccer(football), just not a sport that has my interest. But yeah for the USA. Lets hope soccer grows for our own country and we produce some players to represent SA

The most interesting soccer ever, even our own kids want to play fifa on their playstations but it won't be South African soccer, they will even tell you who is the best player with United States soccer. We can't wait for 2026 it will be epic

I'm so happy that America gets to host the 2026 World Cup, it is going to be something amazing to see and i'm sure America is going to put there everything into making it spectacular.

This is definitely very interesting! One would never think that soccer would be a big sport in America..I am very excited to see how they will compete in the next world cup especially because they will be one of the hosting countries with some home ground advantage!

Sinead  said:

Wow that is quite astounding. Not only the fact that they can also kick balls other than throw them ='''D but that their soccer interest and ability is actually big.
The USA will definitely do a good job at hosting, I think. Their infrastructure is far better than that of South Africa that's for sure.

Daniella  said:

I can honestly say that i thought the biggest sport in America was football, I really didn't know that soccer was a popular sport there.

Jessica  said:

USA certainly have the infrastructure to host such an event and won't see millions wasted on building new stadiums, that have little to no use pursuant the World Cup - as was seen in SA!

As Ruby stated hereunder, a number of 'stars' are moving to MLS - I believe Wayne Rooney may be one such? But it has seen the likes of David Beckham. It has been argued however that it is where the 'stars' go to retire?

None the less, the co-hosting idea is very appealing - I wonder how Trump's wall around Mexico will fare in such an event

I am thinking about how old I will be then and it is a scary thought. I thought football was more big than soccer in the USA so quite interesting to know that soccer in that big. So will the players be traveling between those countries? I guess it is a good thing after the blow/humiliation of the USA not qualifying for the tournament for the first time in years. Morocco was never a viable candidate logistically, especially in 2026.

Ruby  said:

I agree, so many stars are moving to MLS soccer league. I also believe that Christian Pulisic is the future for USA soccer team.

Quite interesting. I did not know that soccer was so popular in the USA. But I am sure that they will be great at hosting the world cup.

Megan  said:

Personally never doubted the popularity of soccer in America, they have a few big players over there including Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is highly ranked worldwide for his technique, creativity and strength. They also have yearly programs for international youths to participate in trials for the opportunity to play professionally for their leagues which obviously means they're expanding.

Alexis  said:

Did not think that it was that huge there to be honest. Happy for them that they got it though - I have seen them play before and they were not bad....so one never knows

The biding process and the awarding is not fair. I can assure you that there is a lot of money changing hands on the week on the final results. Who can forget one Charles Demisy who refused Africa the first right to host the world. Fifa has resolved to rotate it, so lets see which continent is getting it next .

david  said:

i see both david beckham and wayne rooney are now busy in america. a much bigger market than europe, that's for sure, so massive opportunity to make money.
