Facebook acknowledging time wastage with Instagram

I saw in the Version 58 of the updates to the Instagram app that Facebook, who owns Instagram, introduced a new feature.  That new feature is a daily reminder to give you an alert when you have reached the amount of time you want to spend on Instagram for the day.  One can only imagine how horrifying some of the stories they must be aware of are, in terms of how much time is wasted by people scrolling through hundreds of photos of everyone else and having to like them.  I say having to, because if you don’t “like” them, then people will not like your pictures and of course many people just “like” all sorts of people’s pictures so as to attract more followers.  It is an incredibly destructive waste of one’s time.  I am not even going to go into the fact that wonderful, beautiful pictures of nature or actually incredible things never get liked as much as bikini photo’s or women in various poses that I thought were not classy but one of my staff told me are called “savage” pictures and are apparently more and more the norm now.

I think it would be better if this was to be used as a good source of important information.

I don't have Instagram.People give out to much information about them self and it's not save. People don't care about family time anymore its only about Social media.

I find it quite entertaining! Social media has basically boiled down to the classic barter system - a like for a like, or else. It's a sad reality that people do become lost in this virtual reality, where time does not matter. Moments, hours slip away in the blink of an eye.

Humanity is wired in such a manner that we want to belong to a particular class. Most people don't really use their accounts to give helpful information but is about showing what one did over the weekend and what your mama gave you. These are powerful tools which if used properly we will be a well rounded informed community.

People who likes each and every picture they just want attention and to see how many likes they will receive back that's all.

I did not know of this new feature of Instagram until reading this post, I personally believe this feature as well as Instagram is pointless. If you have Facebook, personally I don't feel that one needs Instagram as their features are very similar. Most of us have it though, just for fun! Another pointless upgrade to a pointless app if you ask me.

I don't have Instagram, I just don't see the point of it at times. I have no doubt that many people spend hours of their day looking at other people’s profiles and pictures. But I respect that many people enjoy it for their own reasons.

I have an Instagram account, but don't really use it. I sometimes go and look at pictures especially our local artist - just nice to see they are as normal as we are. I also get a lot of exercise ideas or wedding ideas for one day lol.

Instagram is an utter waste of time even though it is highly addictive and no matter what you will end up spending a few minutes on it once you go on. It would be so much better for one's psychological well-being as well a time management if one could completely cut out any form of social media, however, there is something that draws so many people and this will not likely change.I think that this is a good initiative in terms of bringing people's attention to how much time they are spending on these apps.

I have Instagram I hardly go on it I have so little followers social media doesn’t really faze me. Maybe I'm still very much old school. But I can imagine it will drive a person insane getting all the notifications.

I had a Instagram account & also Facebook. But I recently decided to delete it from my phone. As it takes so much time from peoples life. And now I have so much more time for myself and for things in life that is actually much more worth.

Not interested in Instagram. Its quite funny to think how some people get so lost into social networking that they do not realize what the time is, what is around them and how much time in family they are missing out on.

It's kind of shocking that they have created a feature to alert you the time you have spend. Amazing how time passes when you scroll and I can see how it can become an addict, what is the next post and next picture. I am one of those that does not have instagram and facebook.

I think this is a great feature and I think it will help raise a lot of self awareness for people who spend their lives on their cellphones. Perhaps if you have time limits set on the app it will then keep people from going onto social media whilst driving because they would rather use the app when they can give it their full attention.

Somehow I think Social Media platforms are simply designed to make you second guess yourself, regret things you haven't done or couldn't do, promote fantasies of unrealistic truths and portray other lives as more perfect than your own.

I have none of these apps and so cannot give a proper comment - it is the world of wanting to be acknowledged and having a feeling of being something which you are not. I would have loved to live in the days of making an effort and rather getting appreciation for that - even if it is by one person

Social media has become the norm for one to withdraw from a crowd and having that now will make one realise how much time you really spend on Instagram.

Social media is were most people keep up with life, it's were we get to know the new and popping things, social media is fun but it can also be cruel. I have instagram and am not on it everyday but we i have time i go and check out what is new and what is fun.

Social media is definitely additive. It would be interesting to see how much time the average person spends on Instagram and other social media platforms like Facebook.

Social media is an incredibly huge waste of time, but when you have nothing to do, best believe you'll be there scrolling through "The Gram" - keeping up with what others are doing with their lives. It's entertaining and also irritating.
Great feature though. That way you know exactly how much time you are wasting. I'm sure people lose hours watching other people's stories etc.
I try not to spend too much time on Social Media because it is also somewhat pretentious... But we do what everyone else does I guess...
I also deleted Snapchat. That was a waste of data and time!

I have Instagram but i barely post and it scary how much time people waste on social media. People give out to much information about what they doing or where they are and what they eating. People are more interested in other peoples lives then there own life.

I have never used Instagram but I hear people speak about it so often that it must be a big part of their lives. The idea of posting pics for "likes" makes no sense and is devoid of anything meaningful, unless of course this is how people monitor their worth in which case I am very worried about society. Why not post pics promoting how people can make a positive change in the World- the "big picture" is out there in the World- go find it.

I do not have an Instagram account but I have Facebook. I do not spend much time on Facebook but when I do, it's usually just 10 minutes. Most people only use social media to see whats going on in others life's, cause some people post their whole life on Facebook. Not a big fan though.

The world is crazy today, and I am in agreement that this is such as waist of time to go thru some strange photos and still rate them! I am defiantly do not have time to waist.....

It's exceptionally scary to see the value people place on social media. The TV series Black Mirror often touches on the subject and although Black Mirror is supposed to depict futuristic horror situations, it's actually not that far from where we are now. Some people need the validation and 'likes' on social media to feel as if they are succeeding in life, which is a very risky way of valuing yourself.

In my opinion data costs too much to be spending time on Instagram. However, I have never been a huge fan of social media but think its important to be present in this day and age. Social Media is the new normal and I don't see anything wrong with it. Some people always have their head in a book and others are always on social media...whatever works for you is fine by me.

The other day I went out for dinner with a few friends and when our order came one of my friends asked us not to eat as she wanted to take a photo of the food first and post it, I was shook!
Social media has taken over so many people’s lives and they literally can't do anything without posting it first.

It's actually quite hectic how easy it is to fall into the rabbit hole of social media - on a social media platform like Instagram it has the moments of your life that you have captured demeaned to how many likes it has gotten. many people tend to forget that people only post the best parts of their life, and many people become obsessive and competitive.

FOMO - or the Fear Of Missing Out - is one of the most common themes that drive people to social media as well as people promoting a lifestyle (may be fake)which fulfills a natural desire to belong or to be known... Obviously as humans we look for time pass methods.
The challenge is the youth realize that they waste time on social media but can't tell when they have become addicts. Besides scrolling to like pictures and seeking validation that our friends like us and we like our friends (instant validation), one could learn some skills to create a business on the side etc. Some people have become wealthy just off social media. I do agree though that some of the poses and "savage era" is too much. I don't think a tracker will stop people from wasting time on social media but it is a responsible decision by the developers indeed!

It is shocking that people get so hooked on social media that it asolutely starts to run their lives for them. I think people truly miss out in life if they get so addicted to instagram and other social media platforms.

I use Facebook much more than instagram, and I rarely scroll through Instagram for more than 2 minutes at a time, it does not really interest me all that much.

Jessica  said:

My prescence on social media is lacking to say the least, but I can see how one would get caught up scrolling for hours on end, especially when you have unlimited internet access ;) That being said, I have never heard of a picture being referred to as 'savage' and quite honestly if you refer to your own pictures in that manner it is somewhat degrading! But then again, words that were once percieved to have negative connotations now in fact have the opposite, such as the word 'sick' - it can often be used in a positive fashion. Modern English language is quite odd if you ask me!

I am a Instagram user and i just scroll through the photos and like photos that attract my attention. Other wise i would just scroll through the photos just to pass time, sometimes i just go through all of my own photos just to see what i loaded up a few years back and sometimes it is fun to just go through your own photos to go through your memories from the past.
