Crime statistics down

It is fantastic to see that the crime statistics are going down. The murder rate in South Africa is still absolutely unacceptable but now it is actually surpassed by the number of people that die on our roads meaning that that is still your biggest danger. In 1994/1995 27 000 people in the country were murdered and 16 years later that is down to 15 940 murders a year and a drop of 6,5% compared to the previous year.

Crime is very high, and no i don't believe that it is getting better but this is the life we are living. People are desperate and they will do whatever it takes to get what they want. I do believe however that the murder rate will go down if people stop resisting their attackers, it is when we resist that they become aggressive and kill. How much more valuable is your life than your possessions. Just a thought

They say the crime rate has gone down but the rape has gone up, so I just want to know isn't rape considered a crime? I don't honestly think the crime in this country will ever go down as it is people second nature to do a crime now and get away with it. Also as David and Nadia said it is such a schlep and people are now turning to the public to help instead, by broadcasting bbm's and facebook and twiter to people that actually do want to help and that will help.

I'm conflicted about how to interpret the crime stats, it looks good on paper that certain crimes have gone down but this is based on reported crimes. Not ALL crimes are reported-so how accurate are these stats?

i personally do not believe the crime stats are down where? my daughter had an inccident a few months in broad daylight where the followed her from the atm machine and hit her across the head from behind and stole the money she had drawn,my son was viciously attacked on saterday night last week and stabbed in the head, forhead and just below his one eye requiring stitches,he was close to losing his eye and that for a pair of R80 takkies and a damn cell phone! you can't report the 3 that did it because he can't identify them!

I agree with David. They broke into our car and house on 24 August 2011 and, even though we went to the SAPS to report the matter we still do not have a case number and, we are still awaiting for them to came out to take fingerprints.... not that it will be of any use now..... the next problem that the SAPS are now causing is that the insurance will now make a big deal about the fact that we do not have the case number as yet and will use that not to pay for the stolen goods.

The crime is getting ridiculously terrible. I was staying in Randburg, Robinhills and they broke into our house by unscrewing burglar bars, managing to get away with laptops, cellphones, watches, jewellery, money etc. luckily they left us alone!!! However the first time my aunt and uncle were broken into, my gun was hit over the mouth with a gun and my cousin of 3 years old was pulled out of the bed by her hair because my aunt told them that they do no have a safe. They were then all locked in the smallest bathroom in the house whilst these strangers were roaming their house through their belongings they worked hard to get. ADT did not get there in time. The way the crime is going at the moment in SA is disgusting.

I watched this on Carte Blanche the other night I was impressed. Maybe just maybe South Africa is becoming safer. But it doesnt mean we dont hear stories and also not everyone reports every single crime that takes place because its such a shlep. Going to the police to even report a crime is a mission because at some stations there really is no service! I went to report an attempted hijacking and was made to feel as if I was lying just because I reported it the next day instead of reporting it immediately at 3am in the morning.

the reason crime sats are down, is because people do not bother reporting crime any more. the police also make it difficult for you to report a crime... A short while ago a motorvehicle of mine was stolen, i went to the saps closest to my office to report it, they said i should go to the station in the area the theft occurred. were it not for the fact that i know you can report a crime at any SAPS station in the country, they'd have had me on my way to that police station. how many traumatised crime victims have been spun this yarn, and let's face it, are you going to go back to the same area a crime was commited, to report it??? i also belive that a lot of people have lost faith in the SAPS. when the chiefs are corrupt, why would the lower ranking officers not be???
