Police get number wrong

It appears that with the Crime Stop campaign, instead of putting in the number 08600 10111, they left out the one zero and had 086010111 instead. That is going to cost a fortune and it is going to lead to a lot of people, on an urgent basis, calling the wrong number and being met with a busy tone. It is amazing how such a catastrophe can happen, and how little effort must have been made by the advertising company concerned in cross-checking the number. One of the basics to me would be to dial a number that you are given in the first place and see whether or not it is working. In fact, with my own free number, 0800 accident, if it was not for testing, we would have had some tremendous problems, because it was not initially registered correctly!

Just wondering about the intelligence of the "person of authority" signing off to the advertsing company. Surely if you can't spot a mistake like that you should not be in that position. And most probably nothing more than a shrug and maybe a slap on the wrist where in the meantime this could have cost somebody their life.

This is what happens if the standard of education is constantly lowered. They want to tell us they are combating crime when they can’t even get the phone number right.

It is always so disappointing and rather humiliating when reputable companies place ads and it seems that absolutely no time has gone into proofreading.

And in a a situation like this it is absolutely inexcusable as people need this information to be correct at the most dire moments.

Is this what the police mean by "zero tolerance"?

I am not at all surprised. For those of you that has to phone police stations for accident reports and the likes - I FEEL WITH YOU!! Where I'm at, I have to do this myself - no Sibongile to help out :-) - and it's a MAJOR, MAJOR mission and frustration - I hate it. I've called various police stations that no one even answers the phone!! What if there is a crisis? I've phoned one the other day - a lady answered the phone, spoke in some language to me, left me hanging on the other end of the line until she and whoever finished their conversation - and then cut me off. Another "officer" told me after I asked to speak to the relevant dept re OAR's, and I quote, : "ohhhh, that's a very difficult question..." ???? Ag nee man. The same goes for RAF, WCC and Home Affairs - absolutely pathetic - you can't complain about the service, cause their ain't any

I actually heard this over the radio the other day. Almost a week ago I think. I remember there were two people in the car with me and the inside of that car has never been that quiet. We all burst out laughing in the end but this is serious stuff.
Spending that much money on an error. Like Nicolle said, there is obviously process to getting a campaign up and running. How did no one spot this??
I think this might be another one of those situations where this one thinks that one would've spotted it and that one thinks this one would've and in the end nothing gets done and a whole lot of money goes to waste.

I have to agree with Kaylene if they had taken this Job seriously and just worked correctly and paid basic attention when completing their task / Job there would not be such a simple yet very important mistake made.

only in SA!

For some strange reason this is not a shock to me. Our police force is not exactly fantastic, and when you phone them with a problem, they don't have a car, because someone else is using it. And like Thembi said, we are told that the crime is being tackled...

Considering the importance of the number - it is rather disturbing.

The police wants to tell the nation that they combating crime when they can not even write the phone number correctly.

How can they be helpful with the wrong contact number.

Wow . . Seriously can't believe this . . I simply cannot grasp that the draft for the campaign probably went through a million of hands . . the brain storming . . the planning and ensuring that everything is order for the campaign to be successful and the essence of it lost because of a typographical error?

Sad to know . . and we wonder why crime is spreads like wild fire in SA? Lol probably because you can't ever get hold of the authorities.

This shows how serious the job was taken, and its not their money that they waisting so why should they care. Such an obvious mistake was made.
