A special press conference was held by the Reserve Bank on Saturday, 11 February, to announce the new bank notes for South Africa. The current designs have been around for 20 years and in keeping with international practice, new notes with new designs are released from time to time. The new ones commemorate South Africa’s first democratic President, Nelson Mandela.
The design looks good and will be in use before the end of the year. I think a new R500 note may have been a good idea, but no doubt that will come in time. Without different pictures on each note one will distinguish more by colour and the amount on the face of the note.

I think it's a nice change, But my heart will always bit for the big five's. On five hundred rand i think it will be so great to create it. Bear in mind we didn't have two hundred rand was not de But it was introduced and we enjoyed it. So i think five hundred rand will be a good idea. Wish it can have our big five's On it cause now their part took by our Golden hero. Cool. Take care

Coming from a country, where political regimes have taken 180 degrees turns; and worshipped leaders were later named dictators, tyrans or plain drunks - I believe it's safer to stick to elephants, lions and other species rather than a human one.

I prefer the Big Five. It's our country's trade mark.

It’s great to pay tribute to Mandela but I also think it’s best for faces not to be on our notes. I like the big five.

I think it looks very British. Nice. But I agree with Lucretia. Why the faces. Not every single citizen will be happy with the choice of the faces and rightfully so.

Noooo, why would they want to put presidents pictures on our notes. We are the only country that has good looking notes because peoples faces have been left off them. No offence to Madiba, whom i love to bits, but let us look at some of the other faces! Also, we are known for the BIG 5, let our currency promote us.
In terms of R500 notes, not a good idea, what next, R1000 then R10000. Has not worked elsewhere why do we think it will work here??

I have to agree with President Jacob Zuma "the gesture was a befitting tribute to President Mandela who was a symbol of the country's struggle for freedom, human rights and democracy." It will make South Africans remember and appreciate their achievements in order to continue the journey towards a more prosperous society

I don't know if I like the colour. As Kaylene has said let’s hope it looks better when they do begin to manufacture it.
Nelson Mandela on the notes, amazing and about time :-D

Even though I like the big 5 more, this is still a nice tribute to Nelson Mandela.

It is about time that new notes are designed. It looks almost like foreign money. It will feel so good when receiving the new notes, you will sort of brag with it because of the old designs being around for so long, it will feel like you are not from SA.

Im all for Nelson Mandela being on the money, but the colours is not so good. I got a peak preview of all the notes, and not really impressed about the colours. I hope it will look better when its in my hand

I think that Nelson Mandela is a great man, and he changed our country for the better back then. I jsut wish our current government will follow his example.

I personally never carry any cash on me however I do think this will be a nice change. As for the R500 note, you could then carry a lot more money on your person at half of the weight of the current notes.

I like it. Was wondering when Nelson Mandela's face was going to appear on our money.
