Electricity shortages to come as soon as April

Eskom’s own predictions are that, as early as April this year, there is going to be shortfall of capacity of more than 4 000MW at peak times. It looks like the blackouts of two or three years ago are about to return, and perhaps all those people who tried to invest in the generator business at that time, are going to find people to sell those generators to now.
If demand is going to exceed supply by April, one wonders how bad June through to August, with the demands of winter, will be. Of course, in getting businesses to trim their use of electricity, they will also be trimming the economic growth of the country, so either way this is not good for South Africa. It is going to take many, many more years to bring on line new clients and of course that holds back job growth.

The fact that load shedding is looming is concernng, especially taking into account the huge increase lat year and the fact that if power stations were maintained properly the shortages could probaly have been avoided.

Eskom is destroying the SA economy by failing to plan correctly. Unplanned maintenance because they have a backlog? Beyond belief that they are so incompetent.

This is so ridiculous. Like Genevieve said, surely by now they should have made Plan B? And we have to keep paying and paying. I so wish we had solar or gas installed in our flat.

I am not looking forward to this, The worst is having no electricity during the coldest months of the year.

I hope that by some grace We are not affected to badly.

This has been a problem in our country for a long time now and it just appears to be getting worse with no solution is sight, we are expected to cut down on usage which is understandable however there are street lights burning throughout the day? Does not make sense to me that we are to cut down but electricity is still wasted by the government.

We pay way to much for electricity.
Eskom has been battling with electricity shortage since January 2008, but its problems date a decade earlier and are due to lack of investment in new capacities and in updating the existing power stations. Last year, Eskom increased its tariffs by 31 percent and asked for 35 to 45 percent annual increases for three years in order to scrape together about R400 billion needed to build new power plants.

This is really getting annoying.

Oh no not again, these people are not serious. This will mean robots also out of order again, causing alot of caos and traffic again as well. South Africa is heading the same way that Zimbabwe is in now, but god forbid that.

One can only get upset over this.

I agree with everyone who has commented - "why pay so much for it?" I often wish for another company to open, so that Eskom has competitor - perhaps it is because they have absolutely no competition that they have no real interest in satisfying public demand. I mean it's not like the consumer has a choice, we cannot simply switch to an alternative provider.

Luckily where I live, we are close to Egoli gas lines, at the moment all of our geysers, ovens and stoves are run off the gas. And although it’s a major expense too have all of the necessary installed, in the long run it’s a win-win.

Perhaps it's time for consumers to take initiative, install solar or gas - not only do you save on money, but when there is a black out, you still have hot water and can cook :-)

If the electricity is going to hit us, lets hope it hits the big wigs as wel, this way hopefully they will pull finger and actually do something to rectify this problem which, incidentally, we would not have had the government paid attention to this very warning some 10 years ago. Talk about African time :-(

I am so tired of this! Do they not think of the effects and we pay so much, why do we pay so much for something they cannot provide to us, It's really annoying

yeah dinner by candle light brilliant david problem is you are gonna have to cook that dinner by candle light too! it's pathetic!! we are paying so much for it while others just steal it there is no one in my house the whole day, i turn off the geyser every day, me and my husband use one plate on the stove only, and we bath together what more must a person do?

It is absolutely ridiculous and when you think about it, electricity costs are so high and majority of households are paying well in excess of R2000.00 per month. And the worst part of all is that although you sit without electricity for X amount of hours on X amount of days, you will still be paying the same amount on your electricity bill irrespective of the blackouts. Shocking!

Genevieve  said:

One would expect them to at least by now have a Plan B. There are always some or other issue in South Africa. But like David said, dinner by candle light. This could mean families bonding, playing games, instead of just slouching on the couch watching tv with no interaction.

Simone  said:

I really hope that it doesn't affect us too badly. When the blackouts were supposed to start a few years ago it didn't hit Cape Town that much and it only really went off very late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Boredom is going to strike with power failures...

Sally  said:

This makes one wonder why you need to pay so much more for electricity
