Rearview cameras in cars

I was very excited to see plans, in America, that all US cars will have to have rearview cameras by 2014. These cameras allow drivers to see what is behind them and it is an invaluable help, for example when reversing. Apparently, the extra costs per motor vehicle will be $160 to $200 dollars per vehicle but this will certainly be off-set by eliminating the blind spots that lead to so many accidents. Let’s hope that South Africa does not lag too far behind in adopting a change like this, because we don’t need to have old model motor vehicles sold in South Africa that are not, for example, allowed to be sold in the US!

This is a brilliant Idea, hope that we can also have it in RSA.
But will make the drivers even more lazy and lead to adapting more bad habits on the road.

I'm so glad that parallel parking is very seldom necessary nowadays.... As for parking at the office......maybe they should be thinking of installing those cameras in the front - we won't be parking too far from the office building - lol. And on the sides for people like Brenda etc.... haha - I cannot mention some of the others, they're too sensitive

Clever idea!. The sooner it's implemented in SA the better.

I think it is a good idea because most people drive reckless on the roads. But with rearwiew cameras accidents will be less and more lives be served.

So what are you going to do if someone is walking up to your car to hi-jack you at a busy intersection? At least it will give you time to take your keys out and have a peaceful hand over. I don't see why a review mirror is not sufficient

Yes, great idea, particularly for blind spots... although don't see how it can avoid a hit from behind........ in a revue mirror you can see a car coming fast anyway, the camera is not going to make a difference there.

You are either a good driver or a bad driver.... technology doesn't improve a persons driving skills. Truth!

I really think that if you can't see all of this from your rearview mirror, you should not be driving. There are small mirrors on the side mirrors to see your blind spot and I actually think it is just a waste of money.

I think this is a excellent idea, also helps to see who is comming from behind (Being a citizen in this country) in the event of a hi-jacking.

I also have to agree that this will help elimanate accidents. very good idea.

A very good idea. Hopefully it will cut down the accidents that do occur because of blind spots It might take a while to come to SA as everything does

i think this is a brilliant idea! not only for the being able to see while reversing but all the other benefits that will go with,as in seeing smash and grab idiots coming up from behind and seeing someone that is driving to fast coming up behind you,and giving you a chance of being able to move if possible before they hit you!

I think that this is a great idea. I just hope that people won’t be concentrating on it so much that they forget about the front.
