Do you still watch TV?

I have noticed in recent years that the TV advertising that my firm does has become less effective.  People don’t watch as much live TV now as they used to – something that the television companies in South Africa seem to pretend to ignore when hiking their advertising rates each year – when there is not justification to do so, because they are all losing audiences.  The events that are still watched in a big way are generally live sports events, but a lot of people don’t watch much live TV anymore.

I would be interested to know, with reference to you and your family as to whether or not you watch any live TV and if so, what the programmes or events are and generally how you watch?  Is it something you have recorded to watch later without adverts or are you using Netflix or another similar service?

I do still watch TV, mostly in the evenings during the week. I find that it helps me get my mind of the days stresses! I mostly watch series like master chef or crime investigation where there are new episodes weekly.

I watched TV last night for the first time in a while... Which was still repeats of series.
There's never anything to watch and that is why I always stream. I find that TV is very repetitive and/or outdated.

My husband and I still have DSTV, and we do like to watch news/educational programs/ sports and for me always very exciting to see De Broglio Adds on. I still believe majority of people are still watching dstv sports programs, South African people love their sport!

We have DSTV, Showmax and Netflix. My mom watches a lot on DSTV, I prefer going to movies and I don't really watch a lot TV. I really only watch what everyone else is watching at home.

We only live stream, I do not miss the constant same movie being shown over and over. We only watch TV when its bed time. Mostly we watch Youtube, make sure you have a good line and uncapped.

I no longer watch TV. DSTV's programmes just repeats the same movie or same series every week so I switched to watching Youtube documentaries as it is alot more informative than watching a show or a movie and you can actually learn alot of new things from Youtube from food to history , just about anything.

i Sometimes but not often will watch live tv but the adds i cannot take so id rather not watch it at all, i normally watch series or stream online. Dstv just repeats the shows so i normally will only watch catch up as it has no adds.

My family and I still have DSTV although 90% of what we watch on DSTV is on catchup or recorded because adverts are annoying and going through live TV to find something to watch is time consuming. We do use Showmax and Netflix but DSTV is still our primary resource. With regards to our adverts specifically...My family and I have watched Carte Blanche live religiously for years and still continue to do so. I think its a great slot and think we should hang on to that one for the time being.

Melissa  said:

I don't watch a lot of tv as there are simply no time to do so. If we decided to watch dstv it's also a waste because they show the stuff over and over again.

If I do watch something live I will pause it at the beginning or tape it in order to skip the adverts whilst watching, and also to make it fit into the time slot I am able to watch it and not busy with something else. But regarding our adverts, a lot of clients have said "well, we saw your ad on TV and though best to go to De Broglio..." so it does work if your audience sees the advert on tv - I think more so than if the audience sees the advert on the internet or You Tube or the like.

My husband and I don't watch TV throughout the week at all. The main reason for this is that we get home after 6 or sometimes before 7 and then we have to prepare dinner and get ready for the next day. When we do watch TV we tend to record shows and watch Netflix and Showmax. I agree with Ruby in that DSTV is outdated and the shows just get repeated on a daily basis.

This is exactly what I was saying. No one watches live TV anymore. We stream ad-free! Advertisers should be careful not to spike up the prices too much or they will be completely out of business. I guess in the cinema people are forced to watch adverts and when playing a game or watching a video on facebook. Those may still be effective! Also can't really get away from radio adverts - alot of people like to listen to the news etc when driving.

We don’t watch live TV anymore, we cancelled our DSTV a while ago. DSTV had the same shows over and over again. We download or stream movies and series. I don’t miss live TV at all.

I do watch some live tv still. The other night I actually got frustrated as we were watching Dr Pimple Popper (YES I WATCH IT) and the amount of ad's that they played. I will never ever do that again. They had SOOOOO many ad's running like 15min ad's and 10min of the show. I will rather watch on Netflix. I would never put myself through that again with ad's. I say the best places to have ad's running would obviously be Youtube, Facebook, Twitter etc as people use that more.

I do watch TV and see Nikita and clients pop up on the TV for several times. I also think that most of people have less attention and less interest on watching TV these days, and think that most of people’s full attention drawn by phones.

I refuse to have a TV in my apartment. If I want to binge watch, its almost always on my laptop. I think advertising on social media and Youtube is a great idea. Other than the adverts I read on my phone, I always hear adverts on the radio in my car, especially around the news broadcast. An advertisement of de Broglio Attorneys before the traffic report would be great.

Not a huge TV fan to say the least and do not watch a lot in any event, I prefer reading. However, when i do watch, it will be through Netflix or Showmax or the equivalent. As with a lot of things used widely way back when...times have changed and all change with time.

I never watch live TV with netflix, showmax and Youtube there is no need to. If there is a live soccer game or sporting thing going on we will rather go out and watch it there then pay for DSTV.

I have never been a big tv fan and, therefore, cannot really say much about this blog. I don't have DSTV nor do i have Netflix. If I put my tv on, it is to have noise in the background when I am busy and when I do watch it is the norm, either news or top billing, etc. If I watch a movie, it is on my laptop which is plugged into my tv or on the laptop as a whole. I can say that most of my family don't have live tv anymore, they all live stream now.

Clare  said:

I don't watch TV and I must say that DSTV has so much repeats that I don't even feel that paying so much for DSTV is worth it anymore. I do watch my shows on Netflix and ShowMax.

I have Dstv at home and we have subscribed on price lock that is for 2 years and you pay the same price for the 2 years and i can record or catch when i have time and is very nice, but mostly we watch SABC because of the new and the other programs and we still get adverts about movies and more that will be happening in the few weeks or in a month

My mom and dad have DSTV. My mom watches a lot of Kyknet - even though she is English and my dad watches mostly movies and series. We have Netflix and Showmax and DSTV Now, so basically we can watch almost everything on DSTV, but mostly use it for the sport and catch-up. My boyfriend and I aren't big TV people, if it is on it’s mostly over a weekend or just for something in the background. I also like to believe that you need to spend time with each other and talk about your day and not just sit in front of a TV the whole night.

My husband is an IT guy so everything is online. Our TV is connected to a computer that is always online so anything we want to watch is online - nothing live.

I also agree with David, the market is cellphone games for ads nowadays. So many people play games, whether a gamer or not, and these people will pay proper attention to the advertisements that appear as they cannot wait to click the "X" to continue with their game - if the punchline, like David suggested, is good enough, you will get people approaching your firm via these advertisements even if they close it and not watch the whole advertisement.

we watch netflix, a lot of youtube and kids youtube, and i stream some other content via additional online providers - no ads.

my wife and i were discussing exactly this last night. We have not had an advert play in our home for a very long time, and when they do, it is international tv channels we are watching so the ad is wasted on us. I recently upgraded to youtube premium, and that means absolutely no ads there either.

I honestly believe that the only way people will ever watch your advert is if they are getting something for free - like cell phone games. in a game i am busy with you get extra credits etc if you watch the adverts. some of these ads are 30 seconds long, and that's when i make tea. some ads allow you to skip them after 5 seconds and still get the reward. If the 1st 5 seconds are actually good, i find myself knowingly watching the ads, because they are good and i have not been forced to watch them.

google will obviously have stats on what demographics are playing which games. if i wanted my ad viewed i would make the 1st 5 seconds the punch line, and the next 25 more about the service. i would make it very high quality, as if for TV, and allow people to skip after the punchline.
