England to allow asthma inhalers to be sold over the counter

England is allowing asthma pumps to be sold in normal shops, without a doctor’s prescription from now on. The inhalers, typically in a blue plastic container, contain the drug Salvutamol and typically you use it if you are feeling wheezy or in my case, before I go on a run as I have exercise induced asthma. It is great to see that such necessary medication, which I really don’t think has many negative consequences, will now be available in shops as opposed to having to go to a doctor, get a script and then go to the pharmacy to purchase it and much like Panado’s, there is a justification.

I agree with most of the comments and that is that this is a good thing, but then again we live in South Africa and you will never know whether it is abuse or actually necessary.

I agree with Simone. Nice for 'disadvantaged' people to be able to get same without having to pay to see a doctor just to renew their prescrition.

This is a great idea. Maybe they should only give to people who can bring old inhalers in and swap it then for a new one to minimise the hypochondriacs? Not sure if that'll work though.

With the number of people suffering from asthma increasing on a daily basis, it is definitely great news to hear of such a development.

This is such a great idea. Especially for poor people who suffer from asthma. It's great that they don't have to pay for doctor's consultation as well as for the pump itself.

I think that in a case of emergency and not finding a pharmacy open, the shops selling pumps is a good thing. Just like everything in life everything has a positive and negatvie, the negative is hypercondriac's might just want to buy the pumps even if they dont need it. Eventually one's body gets depended on these things and you would have no choice as to continue using it..... These inhalers are available without a presrciption at the pharmacy in the OTC counter, you dont need to consult a doctor everytime

I think this is a great idea and am very pleased by the way they think. I mean in a case of an emergency it could cause serious danger to first have the doctor prescribe the pump and then to the pharmacy to get one. Love this

I think that is a good thing especially when one runs out and doesnt have to spend a fortune first consulting the doctor and then having to buy it
