What happens overseas is often very important to us, because politicians and law-makers don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time they come up with new laws. It is far easier to study overseas jurisdictions, and see what they have done, and implement things. The legislative move normally starts in some of the more liberal democracies such as the United Kingdom or America, and then it gets slowly but surely copied to nations and countries all over the world.
From that point of view it is very important to sense the growing move when it comes to tax affairs that is developing in these countries, with complaints in America that Mitt Romney is not paying enough tax and in the United Kingdom they have now reached the point where the Prime Minister has basically said that he feels that anybody who pays a handyman or worker at home in cash is ultimately crooking the system. They are well aware that those people that they are paying, be it your taxi driver or a worker, are not usually paying tax. In some regards this is met with howls of outrage with people naturally arguing that they can spend their money how they wish – whether in cash or via bank payments – but the flipside of the coin is that until everybody is brought into the tax system and pays their fair share of tax, those of us registered on the tax system will end up paying more because of the tax that could be collected, albeit in small amounts, from hundreds of thousands of people who are not paying their share and are avoiding coming clean into the system. The message is accountability and if you want to pay less tax ultimately, you have to ensure that more people in the society in which you live pay their fare share of tax because if they don’t, it’s going to be you with your tax number and being taxed on your salary is ultimately that you are going to foot the bill for the tax cheats.

I have to agree with the main comment. I am tired of paying taxes for others who do not really care about working. Maybe if everyone paid tax, the less fortunate would demand accountability because they would have more to lose.

I really did not know that people could be so deceitful when it comes to paying their taxes. Everyone should just do the right thing.

It's really a case of the harder you work the more you have to contribute, when in actual fact you should be able to hold on to more of your hard earned income. There will always be ways around it and let's face it, our country cannot even deal with its heinous crime levels, so a bit of tax evasion here and there will most definitely go unnoticed... After all, our traffic officers 'cooldrink' money they collect doesn't get taxed :)

Its actually unfair to those who pay tax because the Government does not care to do their job properly.
Everyone who is working must pay her/his share.

I agree with Megan. The government can't even COUNT everyone in South Africa, they will never ever know if everyone is paying tax and I think they're just too lazy to try and make an effort anyway. Take the easy way out, charge the people who are registered more.

These people that ar geting paid cash, does not earn alot of money. Them getting paid into bank accounts and tax must also be deducted, their salaries would be even lower

I think it is unfair to those who are registered on the tax system and I agree everyone needs to pay their fair.

In an ideal world everyone would pay their tax and each government could implement a system that would ensure that each employed member of society contributes no matter how small. The people who are paying tax are being short changed, however it is impossible for such a system to be implemented. At the end of the day life is not fair... each person is responsible for the contribution to society and the majority of people will not pay tax on the cash they are paid.

There is always disputes when it comes to tax, most of the time what ever is not agreed on , results in those who do pay their taxes being implimented. which is unfair.
Lets hope all these new tax systems and disputes can be resolved.
