South Africa outperforms at the Olympics

South Africa has really been doing exceptionally well at the Olympics, particularly if you consider the small size of our nation, and more importantly, how little money we put into sports compared to other nations. That is not to say we have money to put into sports when we have millions of people who don’t have clean running water, or even their own toilet in their own house, and so it is absolutely understandable that the emphasis in our country is on basics, as opposed to, as they do in Australia, spending millions on putting together top sporting teams. Having said that, it appears that with tenacity and “can do” attitude of our athletes has allowed them to once again come to the fore. Naturally, we normally win our most medals in swimming and we probably will not win too many in track and field items but I think we have already done ourselves proud.

South Africa has indeed performed well. 5 Medals so far and the sixth one on the way after watching Caster's perfomance yesterday. There was not a single sign of strain on her face during the qualifying stage.Jamaicans are a delight to watch.

The SA Olympics team has done us proud and have been watching and enjoying every moment of it.

They are all focused and determined to bring medals home.

Very proud to be South African right now. We're doing better than anyone would've thought.

We really need to support the SA team more, just like in 2010. The more support they get the better they will do, Im proud of them

Yes, well done to our boys who will be coming home shortly to take part in another big swimming event, name escapes me. I must be honest, swimming and track events are to me the best to watch. Although sitting watching Javelin on Saturday, for the first time, was also enjoyable.

I must agree and I am so proud of our Olympic team as they are really doing well and making our country proud. sometimes the "can do attitude" is all one needs to succeed.

Considering the fact that we dont fund our sporting that much, we are doing great! It really is an achievement! Cant wait to see Castor run, hoping for gold!

David, you are so special - but I have to admit - I too enjoy the pole vault events - for ladies - wow, some of them have great legs! I enjoy the field events - Sally Pearson's 100m hurdle race was amazing!! But boy do I enjoy the Jamaicans! Great pity we don't have more SA athletes. Only SA athlete I saw so far was Olivier in the 800m..

i have been watching the olypics with great interest, and have discovered a new favourite sports: women's beach volleyball. Women's high jump and pole vault is also fairly entertaining.
