Record temperatures in America, with cities like Oklahoma, recently having experienced 49°C, floods, draught, storms and snow in Johannesburg and yet we all seem to think, or at least a lot of people do, that we are not really experiencing climate change. That is pretty much almost the official policy, for example, for the Republican Party in America, that regard most scientists who allege that there is climate change as being whackos who are all exaggerating the situation.
One cannot help but feel, just having a look at Johannesburg, that snow which used to be a once in 20 or 30 year occurrence, is suddenly becoming far more common – we just had it the other day at our offices, as the picture alongside illustrates and yet it was only 4 or 5 years ago that I got up in the middle of the night in my then house, and made a video of the snow falling then. A once every 20 or 30 year occurrence suddenly seems to be happening every 3 or 4 years, and rather than being an isolated event, is beginning to look like it is becoming more of a pattern – maybe in 10 or 15 years’ time it will snow a little bit in Johannesburg every winter? Temperature extremes are becoming more common, and it is quite clear that the one thing human beings still have no way of controlling, and are unlikely to be able to, is the weather.

Global warming is a reality, not a myth. Pity those wacko Republicans cannot accept it and for whatever warped reason they contend it doesn't exist. But then again they also contend that a woman who is raped cannot fall pregnant because of some "biological issues." Madness!!!

I agree with Lucretia, it brings out the child in most of us. And seeing something so beautfiul, is worth it all. It is scary though how much global warming is affecting everything, and who knows what else will change...

I must say that our winters aren't as cold as they use to be, even with the snow I expected it to be as cold as the last time when you woke up to the cold even, but this year you could walk out with no problems. I do believe that global warming is happening and that people aren't taking it serious enough.

It is quite clear and obvious that we are experiencing climate change all over the world. If you're not experiencing it, you need a high five. In the face. With a chair.

It was something truly magical! I think it has everything to do with global warming and something I believe in strongly. The weather and climate is changing drastically. If this isnt an eye opener - what is?

I, for one, love the snow and could quite happily see same, for a day or two, on an annual basis. It brings out the hidden child in all of us.

I was so suprised by the amount of snow that was comming down. I remenber when it snowed last time and it was not as heavy as this. It was so beautiful yet it is scary because this should not be common in Johannesburg. I guess one thing we will never have control over is mother nature.

It's rather scary to think that people aren't alarmed by the drastic changes in our weather and the fact, as you mention above, that these extreme changes in the weather patterns (as per the continent's norm) are happening more often and with occurrence intervals becoming shorter.
Unfortunately no one does anything to look after the earth (or few do rather) and I suppose think that if we ignore the problem it won't affect us.
