It is summer and we have already been exposed to some very hot days, and sensible people will be using sunscreen. I found it tremendously worrying to read recently, following a report on CNN, that only 25% of 800 tested sunscreens are effective at protecting your skin without using potentially harmful ingredients. The Environmental Working Group released the 2012 sunscreen guide and basically what they say is you should use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 and a maximum of 50 and that you should make sure the labels list UVA and UVB. You should avoid products containing Oxybenzone and Retinyl Palminate. They say that those are potentially toxic chemicals, although the FDA has approved Oxybenzone. The information on the various sunscreens can be found at www.breakingnews.ewg.org/2012sunscreen/. They do of course remind everyone that the best sunscreen is a hat and a shirt because then there are no chemicals for the skin to absorb and no questions about whether the product works.

I always take a hat with me on a holiday to the coast , read somewhere the protecetion is more affective. I never read the ingredients on the bottle of anything -will be sure to do so this time round.
great tip.

A little bit of sun is good for one. If I am going to lay in the sun, i limit myself to 20 min on each side and then stay out of it for the rest of the day. Anything in moderation is good for you.

I have also heard that if the factor is too high it can act as a reflective and cause harm to your eyes for example. I always wear suncream and I think it has helped with delaying SOME of the wrinkles ! I still can't believe that every weekend there are girls in my complex who lie tanning by the pool in their bikinis the whole day..... Wrinkles ! Cancer !

The best sunscreen for me is to stay out of the sun. I hate the sun, although I love the summer very much. The sun has just become way too dangerous and i avoid as much as i can. No amount of sunscreen can protect your skin against the sun these days! It has just become way too dangerous.

You used to get even a 100SPF but they don;t make it anymore the reps told us that the company believes that 50SPF is enough. People with fair skin like myself know what type to use and what brand works

I never use to spend money on sunscreen products in Ukraine, even in summer times when temperature climes up to 40 in Odessa - my home city. Always I have been thought to put hat and t-shirt on. I do the same with my kids too, rather when sun gets to strong stay in the shade or inside the building.

This is such a great topic. Thank you for sharing this info with us, I never knew that we should only use sunscreen that lists UVA & UVB. Will definitely look out for it.

I have to put sunscreen on every single day even in winter sometimes. Not that I do but I should. I've never checked if these ingredients are in the products that I use, I should do that.
