I recently had occasion to have an MRI scan again, to investigate some tension headaches that I’ve been having, and apart from terrifying me, as they always do, with thoughts of cancer, brain tumours and who knows what else they seem to find inside my head, I must say that it’s probably the least pleasant examination, while you’re awake, that I’ve been through with a doctor. I’d far prefer to have root canal treatment, something I didn’t enjoy very much, with a dentist any day of the week than go for an MRI scan.
There is something about being laid down, and having a cage fitted over your head before being slid into an incredibly narrow space after which the machine starts bombarding your with noises that seems to induce panic. I didn’t have any medication before the exam, but I was told that approximately 30 to 40% of all people having MRI scans have pills to calm them down, but they can’t drive afterwards. An attorney I know, was sent by the Road Accident Fund, when he brought a whiplash claim against them for an MRI scan. He had to be sedated before he would go into the machine and while that’s probably a severe reaction, I must say that I do understand why people suffer from claustrophia or panic attacks. Once you get used to it, it’s quite calming to actually have some relief from the ringing telephone at the office and the non-stop emails.

I am terrified of going to any doctor-even for something like the flu. I'd rather self-diagnose and self-medicate, and only if that does not work, will I go to the doctor. So I can just imagine how terrifying an MRI scan would be-especially because of the potentially serious consquences of the MRI scan results.

I don't like small places, I would be one of those people who have a panic attacks . I won't go for a MRI or less it is really urgent. My mind would think of the worse things well I lay in there like what if I have cancer etc.

I hope i never need a reason for a MRI to be done, personally I suffer from claustrophobia and might just have a panic attack.
(no thank you)

I did not have a good experience with a MRI either! I felt scared and uncomfortable. It s a weird fear! I wouldnt however choose going to the dentist rather!

Also had a MRI when I was in primary school I will rather avoid it as far as possible, its very quick but uncomfortable.

I've never been for one of these but I don't have a problem with small spaces really and I know this machine makes a big noise so I'd be prepared for that. I don't think I would have a problem.

Sounds extremelly uncomfortable as I hate small spaces, I would take the MRI over a root canal however- the pain I had with mine was beyond unbearable.

I would say the worst is an LP, a lovely long thin needle stuck into your spine and brain fluid being drawn out. MRI's are not that bad, just gets uncomfy after a while and yo are tempted to move, which you cannot
