People are always concerned about fees for lawyers in South Africa, but they lag considerably behind those of American lawyers. A recent survey in America has indicated that the highest billing rate is $1285 an hour with the median rate, for partners, being $500. Those rates would be considered to be outrageous in South Africa apart from for partners at large commercial firms.

You cannot possibly compare American and South African Attorney fees - that would be comparing apples with pears.
First of all we do not work on the same legal principles - where an American can sue at the "drop of a penny" we cannot.

I wonder if the new Legal Practice Bill will affect the structure of salaries in SA with attorneys and advocates becoming combined as a profession. Surely it has to change the way firms bill and pay salaries??

I dont think our currency could could ever be as strong as the dollar , and they are very much more advanced then South Africa is. It will be highly unlikely for us not to go into Bankruptcy if we paid such fees.
I was watching a wedding show where the lady's budget was $10000 for her wedding dress. that is plus minus R70 000.00 its just insane.

What an outrageous amount of money for legal fees. If only more people in our country knew this and could compare our legal fees to America's.
