I am astounded by the lack of hygiene in many restaurants, including extremely well-known ones. I recently, for example, in the butchery section of a well-known restaurant, watched as a staff member carefully took down biltong from where it was hanging with his gloved hand, and then transferred it into his ungloved hand before offering it to me.
It is amazing that even top restaurants cannot get the basics right, which is fresh ingredients handled in a clean way, and your staff members handling something like biltong with their bare hands, is not handling things in a clean way! It is totally unacceptable that people handle foodstuffs, especially foodstuffs that are not going to be cooked at high temperatures whereby any of the germs spread by the hands could perhaps then be killed, without gloves and yet these days it is all too common to either see that or to receive your food with hair in it. My honest opinion is that many of our restaurants, including big name restaurants, would do well with a visit by somebody like Gordon Ramsay, with his cameras in tow and a good telling off for their lack of care and attention to the absolute basics of cooking and handling food.

The truth is that the restuarants are very dirty and the best way it to prepare your own meal at home.

I am writing today regarding the restaurant located in Sandton where I recently experienced an event which disgusted me so much that I will never return to the restaurant again. I had a good mind to write a letter to the Department of Health & Hygiene to investigate this particular Restaurant’s health and safety licence, as well as the cleanliness of their food serving areas, kitchens and general hygiene of the staff preparing and serving the food to customers.
Going out to eat is supposed to be one of life's pleasures, something to be enjoyed, where the customer puts their trust in the restaurant's reputation as well as food hygiene in the kitchen.
During my recent visit to this well known restaurant, I ordered sea food. Only moments after starting to eat I noticed a dead fly in my dish. I immediately felt sick and called over the staff. They apologised and removed my dish and asked me if I wanted something else! I declined to order something else, as my appetite was completely gone, I asked for some tea. My partner who was with me and had ordered the same thing, no longer wanted to eat their meal either, as knowing that the dishes were prepared together in the same kitchen was enough to put us both off the food.
When the bill arrived, I was surprised there was a bill at all! With such an incident, the restaurant should have made the entire meal and tea complimentary! My tea was not even complimentary! Complete lack of customer service and the entire experience has disgusted me that I will never go there again.
That restaurant should be closed down for severe lack of hygiene!

Gordon Ramsay would do wonderful things for these restaurants. He's exactly what they would need. I hate having something wrong with my food and having to complain, because what if the second serving is worse due to waitrons being irritated and therefore spitting in your food? I love going out and trying new things but a home-cooked meal is still the most satisfying =)

I agree with Juliet and what is happening in our restaurant is disgusting.

It all boils down to staff training and management. Look carefully - lately they have VERY young managers that simply doesn't have the know-how and logic thinking and common sense that older people have. You should fire the manager - not the trainee. And I am not saying ALL young people doesn't have the skills - but this is happening everywhere and all over and just too often. I've visited a few restaurants/coffee shoppes and I'm not one to make a fuss easily but jeeeeezzz, sometimes it's just too much. The lack of knowledge and plain, simple common sense is beyond me

I love That show and Gordon Ramsay. I I must agree that SA needs someone like him to start checking up on all these places we eat at and have no idea what is going in the kicthen.
I have found hair my food once it was so disgusting! Lord knows what else other people have had to eat.

The problem is the staff. Even if you give some staff gloves, they will hold raw meat with the gloves on then handle your salad ingredients with the same gloves. It goes back to how people were brought up about hygiene and training by employers. No one can be watched every second so we can only hope that each person will make the right personal choice to be clean and hygienic. I am paranoid about restaurants which is why I like sitting at the conveoyor belt at sushi restaurants so I can watch everything, and they are always clean

the best meal is the one cooked by your own clean hands.there was a program where they used to catch cooks and waitors on hidden cameras , spitting into client's food, urinating in soups and doing all sorts of digusting escapades.
