Long evenings

This is one of my favourite times of the year. There is plenty of time, when one gets home, to go for a walk and do some outdoor exercise. Everything is looking beautiful and the sun is setting after 7 pm.

I think walking is one of the most under-rated exercises. When I was young, I really was quite dismissive of walking, particularly because I used to take part in weekly time trials for running, ran marathons and even ran the Comrades Marathon three times. Where I was mistaken is that what walking really has in its favour is that it does much less damage than running, and it produces much of the same benefits albeit not as dramatically or as quickly. It certainly can be more enjoyable and easier to hold a conversation and to walk in the evening at this time of the year is wonderful. I would certainly still run, and I do jog from time to time, but I do find that it has always left me with shin splints and in one case severe stress fractures on the bones, and one certainly does not get that with walking because the impact with the ground really is not as harsh.

Not only is jogging good to clear ones mind. It is also great cardio and the perfect exercise to get rid of ones stomach fat.

nothing wrong with a nice walk to clear your mind and just forget about everyone and everything for once in your life!

Love walking. Clears the mind, gives you time to recoup and get yourself together before and after work.

Apart from the exercise factor taking a walk can also very relaxing. You might not burn as much walking slower as opposed to briskley but it holds other factors in which is also good for you especially when you lead a very stressed and fast paced lifestyle.

When I use to walk everywhere before I got a car, my weight was always down and I was in shape. I think walking is a great form of exercise and keeps a person fit if you do it on a regular basis

Walking is very underrated. If one walks briskly regularly, you will achieve weight loss just as easily as if you went jogging and the benefit is, you keep off the kilos a lot longer.

I just don't want summer to end! I took David's advice and really enjoying jogging in the early morning. Ofcourse not every morning because it's really difficult some mornings. I find in the evening its far too busy and I'm already hot and bothered from the day with energy levels low.

i injured my knee severely in a motorcycle accidnet a few years ago, and as much as i used to love running, it is now impossible for me. walking, as you point out, Michael, is much less stressful on the body. i find the best time is the early morning. I am usually up at about 4:30 or 5, and go for a very brisk 25min walk. it is wonderful to have some quiet time before the start of the day, to appreciate the day. lovely to watch the day start, and the birds waking up. aside from the excercise, i find it calming.

I do a bit of both walking & jogging. I prefer jogging in the morning when it's still cool and not many cars are on the road.I have to agree with you in regards to the damage running does to the bones because i continuosly suffer from stress fractures on the bones.
