I have always been fascinated by the Drones that the Americans fly, from various bases, and take out terrorists with these unmanned planes. A commercial version, albeit in a very simplified and much smaller form is available, in the form of the Parrot ARDrone and I bought myself one. It is a little helicopter that flies around, up to heights of 50 metres, and while it does so it records video and can take photographs.
The applications that one can think of immediately would be very interesting photographs for estate agents as well as video tours of bigger properties, but apart from that it is just a whole lot of fun. It is quite difficult to control at first with the result that I could read from a number of comments of users that it was likely to break fairly soon, but I did not think that I would break it on only my fifth day of using it! One can imagine sports coaches, even at the schoolboy level, taking some aerial footage of the team’s different manoeuvres for future strategizing.
The ultrasound part of my Drone does not appear to be working anymore and the problem with buying something that is not available for sale in South Africa is that you end up having to return it overseas to have it repaired. It certainly does however give you another glimpse of the future and it cannot be long before more robust versions, at cheaper cost, and which can fly far further, are available and it would allow hobbyists to do a lot of the things that currently require an actual helicopter to do – just for one example, the fly-over television footage they use of golf courses – you will not need to hire a helicopter to do that because you can easily fly the Drone over each hole at the same height taking video footage of the hole.

I love photographs! I particularly love playing with angles heights and depths etc. The drone would prove to be very exciting to experiment the types of shots you can get in the air, and not only that, video footage as well.
This would definately be something on my wish list, which would possibly take months, or even years to save for!

Must be expensive, but is looks like you can have alot of fun with the drone.

Interesting gadgets that are available in the market nowdays. The downside is the rate at which they easily break.

Personally size does matter. I prefer the real thing!

A flying robot, controlled by your phone with a camera that records the world below... How COOL is that? I want one!!!

This is certainly one of the thing Henco will want to have, he loves hobbies and sometimes my back breaks just seeing the prices he pays for these hobbies. But then again it keeps him busy and out of trouble so it’s worth it.... Just don’t think this baby is going to be for him..... So expensive and so easy to break... Unlike the helicopter he has at home where when it crash he can just go to the hobbie shop and buy a new blade or try fixing the broken one

All remote control helicopters break within a few days of using them no matter how much one spends. Gambling would probably be a safer bet

I once bought a toy helicopter but this looks awesome. I don't even want to think about how much it would cost though (/_-) lol

Wow, this is brilliant, I would love to have one… Just imagine the photos that you will be able to take of every angel and different heights…

My dad used to buy fancy "toys" like these for me as a kid. They were usually for him, he just used me as an excuse to play with them. It caused me to love things like these. That expresion men dont grow up their toys just get more expensive could have been very accurate accept that I think it applies to a lot of women too. I wouldn't mind having one.

Im a sucker for these kinds of "out there" gadgets, so i think its a cool toy, especially that it has a camera on it, would be pretty rad to see things from a birds eye view. Id like to give it a go. :)

This is on a whole different level - camera's. I've seen the normal helicopter one's - think there needs to be a cheap version for practice until one gets better at controlling it. I'm sure once it comes out here it will be expensive.

This is awesome! Would love to see the price once it starts becoming more available in South Africa.

Expensive toy! But so cool - I was quite fascinated (almost excited) seeing these little choppers (the cheaper version, of course) in action. The kids had one and after attempting to fly it one of the blades broke after only a few attempts. Mind boggling stuff that's available nowadays - what happened to playing cards and monopoly? :-)
