Many ignore the currency exchange rate, thinking that if they are not travelling overseas it is not really affecting them. Nothing could be further from the truth when one has to factor in the costs of petrol. We are looking at a huge increase this coming month, and that is before whatever increases the government puts on general taxes and Road Accident Fund on budget day.
The budget speech will be on 27 February and normally the increases announced then are effective at the beginning of April. That means we are almost guaranteed to see two consecutive months of petrol prices going up and March’s petrol price increase, and of course it depends on how the Rand trades from now until the end of the month, is looking like it could be as much as 85c. Add on an estimate of at least another 20c in government taxes and Road Accident Fund levies in April, and I would suggest it is probably more like 30c, you may well, by the first week of April be paying R1,10 a litre more than what you are now and that is assuming that the Rand stabilises. If we see any further weakening of the Rand it could be as much as R1,50 a litre extra when we already have high prices.

It is very sad to hear that we will be paying more for petrol. I will soon have to get the bus to work and home how inconvenience is that just to save some money.

This is ridiculous. And what can we as consumers do? Nobody takes a stand and we really have no choice, but to try and make a plan. Everything is just getting too expensive.

Petrol goes up and everything else goes up as well. It is a good thing then that I dont't have a car.

With everything going up like this means we have to go deeper into our pockets and its not good at all.

I agree with David looks like I will be cycling to work from now on. think my boss may need to invest in a shower at work. But on a serious note it is ridiculous the price of petrol! Hopefully something drastically positive will happen in our country for more people to invest this side!

I think I should bring my bed to work along with my family, because at the rate petrol is going, you wont even be able to afford a home. It is hectic and something needs to be done.

In light of Brenda's suggestion, can I join the lift club. On a serious note though, I have been considering purchasing a scooter to commute to the office and back, however, the carnage on our road is a worrying factor. We really are in a catch 22 situation. Something really has to be done about this to make our roads safer and hopefully more people will "THINK BIKE"

This is very bad news. Everytime the government implements price increases on anything whether electricity or petrol you try an adapt and redo your budget to accommodate. You eventually reach the point where you realise there just isn't anymore room for stretching it.

At this rate I am looking at investing in a tandem bicycle, so that i can start a lift club to work and back.

What is there to say? It won't help anyone to complain - buy scooters maybe?
