Petrol has now, for the first time, exceeded a cost price of R13,00 a litre in Gauteng for 95 octane, although it is cheaper at the coast. Only 3 years ago we were paying R8,10 a litre. Let’s not forget that next month sees another 23c tax increase on petrol with 15c being for the general fuel levy and a nominal 8c increase for the Road Accident Fund. There is also going to be another increase on 95 octane petrol soon because this Demand Side Management Levy or DSML has not been increased for quite some time.
Obviously, you can choose to use a lower octane petrol and avoid the higher costs of 95 octane petrol, but you cannot avoid the general taxes as well as the sliding Rand. The current increases were based on a Rand that was stronger than it is now, and if the Rand continues to show weakness, and I certainly hope it does not, then we could be looking at a total increase at the beginning of March of another 50c a litre from the current R13,08 for 95 octane petrol or R12,87 for 93 octane.

I just have one question, and this bothers me, perhaps i can get a logical answer??
If Brent Crude Oil is made in South Africa and Sasol is a South African fuel which uses Brent Crude oil, why are we still paying so much for the fuel? I would think that at least sasol would have cheaper fuel? Just a question.

I'm worried about how the rising petrol price will push the cost of everything up, especially food prices. Adding the toll road situation is also going to make things worse.

I do not think that the Rand that’s weakening has any influence on the rising petrol price... Our country is paying the highest price for petrol at the moment ... and then they keep implementing more ways of paying taxes and toll fees...

R13 for 1 little litre of useless quick burning petrol! Pay double for cars, 5 times more for cellphones than in USA/Europe, our meat is more expensive, our internet, Eskom, toll roads and the list is endless. Yet we are so 'poor'. We working for petrol and to live I tell you! I just need to find a rich husband so life wont be this expensive! Get ready for a possible R14 or even R15 peak!

The weird thing is - traffic is getting more and more hectic. You would think with lift-clubs and such we will have less traffic - it only seems the other way around.
Every time you accelerate you think - OUCH!!! - R1, R2, R3.....
News like this just pulls you down, down, down.... Where people are looking forward to some form of increase - you already start seeing where it is going to end up. How much must one earn to survive?

It is sad that money, something so materialistic can put so much strain on families. And I also don't think it is going to get any better. It just never stops, it's a vicious circle.

I dont even want to imagine what we are going to be paying for petrol next year.
people at the coast are very lucky their petrol is less and seems to go further, from personal experience. compared to us that have to pay more and get less out of it.
just madness

unfortunately, i think the situation will only get worse. the (useless) government are trying to squeeze more out of an ever shrinking tax base.

The continuous increase of electricity, petrol etc in this country is becoming a major problem. E Tol and all the added demands on your salary will eventually break the camel's back. Just rediculous, I don't know what I'm going to do. Perhaps I need to invest in a good bicycle atleast that burns fat not petrol

I realy dont know where SA is going to end up. I will pay more on petrol a month than on food or anything else. This petrol price is realy going to touch alot of our back pockets. Lets be positive and pray that the Rand does not weaken again.

Very soon we will be forced to use lift clubs just to survive in a month. I own a small car, Atos, which costs me ± R1500.00 per month to run, I shudder to think what the bigger cars cost. The Hammer I would love to own, will be just that, "would love to own". I am not prepared to drive a fancy car for the sake of status and be squeezed by the government every month. My Atos will do me just fine.

It's ridiculous and driving minimum 3 hours a day because the traffic lights don't work is spiralling into a very expensive situation! I blame the strikes
