Future tax increases

This year’s budget passed without any tax increases. It is however inevitable, in years to come, that the taxes are going to be raised and no doubt we are going to hear more about that from the person appointed to head the Tax Commission, Judge Dennis Davis. He lectured me at Wits University in tax, and is a highly astute and clever man who was an extremely popular lecturer. One of the problems in South Africa, is that out of a population of approximately 50 million people, only 6 million people pay tax and support millions of others who are not well-off.

Some don’t like that principle, but I have always believed that if one is lucky enough to have a job and be better off than many, there is a duty on you to contribute to society and others, and that is really what tax is about. There is of course also a duty on government, who spends our taxes, to spend it wisely for the benefit of the people, and not to waste them on ridiculous functions, on people who have been suspended from work for years but not fired, etc. There were also some references to the people who conduct their business in South Africa but have their companies based in Mauritius where they pay very low tax. That is an extremely popular tax dodge amongst many in the northern suburbs and it will be interesting to see how SARS goes about challenging this and putting an end to it. Many in Sandhurst and Dainfern will be somewhat anxious.

As long as tax is spent wisely and for the correct purpose, I do not have issues.

I don't pay tax to support the poor, homeless, starving people but rather to maintain infrastructure, particularly the roads so I don't have to forkout the exorbitant costs of replacing tyres and ABS sensor cables!

Tax increases are as ridiculous as petrol increases all we have to do is pay, pay, and they just keep lining their pockets

For Third World Country our taxes are incredibly high, the question is how this tax is used by our government? Just to look on amount homeless people in the country, and townships where people are surviving!!!! I am as well do not believe that out honestly earned payable tax goes to correct hands!

We are required to pay tax and increasing tax only will make some richer and some poorer.

I believe that we all do have to pay taxes in terms of the up- keep of our country, but the money does not get used for such things it gets wasted and its extremelly upset that you work hard to earn your money and others spend it on luxury.

Paying taxes I understand, but I do sometimes think that by supporting those who are less fortunate by paying more taxes does not motivate them to try and fend for themselves. I am not saying just stop supporting them but they cannot rely on other to take care of them for the rest of their lives.

In criminology we learned that one main reason for SA's high recidivism rate is because they are clothed, fed and given a warm place to sleep in. the danger is the same as out on the streets and many weigh prison as a better bet. Supporting these people is somthing that I do have a problem with.

Tax increases to me is acceptable if it is to improve the country, not to feed the lazy or increase the wealth of the corrupt.

I really do not think it is fair for us to take care of the poor and needy as a majority of them know that they get funds from the government and therefore stay poor and needy and the goverment are spending our taxe wisely

I like to see where my money goes to. We are made to believe our tax money goes towards the poor and the needy, water supply, homes, blah blah.... I am a giver, always was always will be - but we all know how many tax-evaders there are and companies that isn't registered at SARS. I do not appreciate supporting skelms.
