Much more competition on cell phone calls and data
We are terribly uncompetitive in South Africa when it comes to the cost of mobile telephone calls as well as data packages. That is undoubtedly because there are only three companies that are competing and if you had eight or nine, you would have much lower prices as is the case everywhere else in the world. It is at least good to see, with the mobile termination rates have dropped recently, that the cellular companies are beginning to compete a lot more and the Sunday newspapers are always filled with advertisements as to all the latest specials, which are considerably lower rates than we were all paying a few years ago. Vodacom has introduced the Red Phones which feature limitless calls and SMS’s. MTN says that their growth is coming from the medium to lower income groups, with most of their sales of data packages being driven by the use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

Cost of mobile phones even on the same network is still very expensive. It is actually cheaper to call abroad or overseas than making a call within the country.

I agree and the competition is not that big with only four companies.

I must agree the the cell phone rates are extremely rediculous, sometimes I think life was much better when we all had home telkom lines and thats all.

I just changed my cell contract because the one I was on was a rip off and so far, on the 20th of the month, I have had all the same benefits/talk time/FB etc as previous contract for a sixth of the price! Don't let contracts just roll over, always know when to cancel especially if you signed up for the wrong one in the 1st place.....2 years is like a jail sentence!!

I agree with Benita. Other countries are so much cheaper. Cellphone companies are really competing and it's so confusing (/_-) lol

Cell phones are a necessity. When mine was stolen recently I realised how dependant I am on it. On the same token it can become a very expensive "luxury" to have, so if you can't afford a high bill at the end of the month you better watch your calls.

Our cellphone and telephone call rates are very high when compared by other countries. We need more telephone companies as Telkom monopolises in South Africa.

With the amount of cellphone use, it is rather strange that we have so few network providers. Telkom has also now realised this they are starting with their own mobile network as well. I do think that it is only a matter of time before some brain boffin starts a new network. It would be very wise to start a new network and get some real competition going!

Before switching to BB and making use of bbm-texting I sent sms'es - I can still not believe the money I spent on airtime. R60 p/m seems like nothing compared to the money I used to spend on airtime. But yes - the wider the field, the lower the rate. Hard to believe that we only have these three (or four) providers.

i agree we are paying to much for cellphone rates. Maybe they will go down in years. And btw there are 4 SA cell companies. Vodacom, Mtn, Cell-C and Virgin mobile
