Decrease in fuel price likely in May

We are looking at some relief from May with the fuel price. This month the fuel price went up, but it was only because of the extra contribution to the Road Accident Fund, something none of us can complain about, given that it does give us protection when we are driving on our increasingly dangerous roads.

The other was just the general revenue tax that the government adds to fuel every year, which is a rather sneaky way of avoiding a confrontation, for example, over increasing the VAT rate. Many forget that most countries around the world during the recent times have increased their VAT rate whereas South Africa has stayed the same and in a way they are hitting us on fuel instead. In the UK, for example, the VAT rate was already 17,5% at the beginning of 2011 and was increased to 20% and they are already talking about a further increase. At the moment, and it is early days in the month, we are looking at about a 27c decrease in the fuel price in April but if we get Rand strength, or the international fuel price declines, we could be looking at a bigger decrease.

Fuel price decrease is definitely welcomed. It seems to me as if the government really want to suffocate ordinary South Africans. One of the examples, for instance, is the mere fact that e-toll will be implemented quite soon.

I am glad it’s going down but just like everyone else I am wondering how long it’s going to be until it goes up again

This would be a huge relief to all of us, but they decrease it with 27c and the next month they increase it with more than they decreased it, at the end of the day the fuel price is still rising unconsciously.

This is really great news. Even as part of a lift club it is very difficult to cope with the high petrol price.

I think you mean we will get relief in May. If the price fluctuates either way, we see the changes on the first Wednesday of the month. That has come and gone. I really do hope that the price starts coming down. It affects more than just our personal pocket. It leads to job losses because households, when faced with finance problems, tend to get rid of luxuries, one of those luxuries are domestic workers, so the ripple effect is enormous. Lets hope we start seeing more decreases in the near future. Would still love to know what happened to our reserves we used to have, were they not sold and, if so, why???

Best news this morning!! Think we always complaining about petrol but don't realize what other countries do. I prefer petrol going up and down that sticking to a 20% VAT which is ridiculous!

Wow, this would be great, a drop in the petrol price is what we need, it’s just too high and not everyone is able to afford it at the moment, and if it does not decrease we might see very big price increases in the coming months…
