New link from meat to heart disease

Some astounding new research has recently come out and was reported in the New York Times, with regard to the link between heart disease and red meat. It seems that the new link is a substance found in red meat called “carnitine”. It is found in other foods, in smaller amounts like fish, chicken and even dairy products, but it is predominantly found in meat. When it is metabolised by the bacteria in the intestines it ends up as a substance called “TMAO” in the blood and it is TMAO that is linked to heart disease.

TMAO allows cholesterol to get into the artery walls and also prevents the body from excreting excess cholesterol which leads to the heart disease. Amongst the interesting experiments they conducted, was to have a vegan eat a steak and see whether or not there was an elevation in TMAO blood levels in them after eating a steak and they did not have any elevation, but regular meat eaters do. They also discovered that if they gave a regular meat eater, antibiotics to kill all stomach bacteria before eating a steak, then there was no reaction of increased TMAO blood levels in their blood. The doctor who has conducted the survey himself is still eating meat, but he has reduced his meat intake to once every two weeks – but what really worries the researchers is that carnitine is in fact found in many energy drinks, because people believe that it will speed up fat embolism and increase a person’s energy levels. The doctor said, when it comes to energy drinks, many of which include carnitine, that the supplements “are scary, especially for our kids.”

Alcohol is bad for you, smoking is bad for you, red meat is bad for you and soon living will also be bad for you. Its like we have to live in fear of dying because every day there is something new that is bad for us and will eventually be the dead of us. I agree live your life like tomorrow will never come and live it to the fullest we will all die eventually. You dont here "dont go on the plane it might crash" or "dont buy a car because you can die" or "dont cross the road you might be run over" or "dont leave your house because you might get robbed and stabbed to dead". Every day we wake is another day to be thankful to because we are alive anything can happen and we will all one day die it is live. So people should stop finding faults in everything, and start living.

My philosophy is, eat, drink and do whatever you want - as long as it is done in moderation. We were put on this earth to live and live I will. I will not deprive myself and be a health freak because even the healthiest of health fanatics will die. So enjoy life, to the full, experience all this life has to offer and lets compare notes on the other side :-)

I am not really a big red meat eater, but it is really strange that all these "findings" are coming out with regards to our food. Unfortunately, we have to eat, and although i don't eat red meat often, this wont stop me from eating it every now and then.

Doctors find problems with everything from what we eat to how quick we walk. The point is you will eventually die... from something. So I would rather enjoy life then spend it at the office of GP telling what I am doing wrong this week.

Red meat should be eaten in moderation. We should eat fish and chicken in between which is so much healthier.

An old saying: to much of anything is not good for you.
If you don't eat red meat on a regular basis I don't see a problem with it.

Death is inevitable. Why live in fear and paranoia?

I wonder if it is actually the meat causing it or the preservatives and chemicals we treat it with as people in earlier years did not suffer from as many problems and they ate what was available. Doctors could obviously not say that it is the chemicals that we treat the meat with as that would lead to accusations and law suits

This is good to know - not that I will stop eating meat but maybe at least cut it down to a ceratin amount a week. I have always heard that red meat is not good for as say other meats
