Judges complain about their conditions

Media reports recently referred to the conditions of Judges in the High Court. High Court Judges from Pretoria advised that they were limited in office space, did not have enough Judges at the Court and in addition to that did not even have enough computers. An advocate who has acted as an Acting Judge in Pretoria even bought himself a reading lamp, because the Court lights often did not work.

Media reports said Judge Cynthia Pretorius said that the Judges were overworked, had far too many matters to deal with and that the problems were made worse by some of the “lazier Judges”, to quote her, who said that she unfortunately has to say that, “because it is the truth”. I have to say that even from the public’s point of view, the toilets and basic facilities at the Courts are pretty poor and have not had enough resources allocated to them, the filing systems and records even worse and the government certainly needs to spend more money on upgrading the conditions for the Judges and improving the functioning of the Courts.

I think courts are very important as that is the place where most decision is make and we depend on the court to send the correct people to jail and fights battle when we have been wronged etc. For courts to be so "poor" it really is sad and for judges to be overworked how can we trust that they are making the correct decisions. Hopefully this will change real soon.

This is very sad to hear as the Judges is the ones at the end of the day who plays a big roll on making the wright decision and if you are over worked and working in difficult circumstances how can you then focus.

I agree with Tanya and Liesl. It is so sad though. I really hope things change for the better. What are outsiders expected to think of our country as a whole when seeing buildings of importance looking like this?

I remember being at court trying to locate a file. We went to one of the offices and the lights weren't working, the computers were extremely slow, it was the middle of summer and it was crazy hot inside of the offices. I don't know how the staff can work there with the poor conditions.

I think the general upkeep of all facilities and roads in this country have gone right down. Service for the most part non-existent. I really cannot add anything more the facts speak for itself.

I have been to Germiston Magistrate Court, its very confusing to deal with firstly. Secondly the building is not in the best condition, it feels dirty when you enter there. I would rather have stood the hour or two to see someone then to sit on the chairs that were provided there.

You would think that it would be better - people just don't care anymore and if you do up a place - maintain it

Not only are the conditions inside court horrible but Nicky told me she went to Johannesburg court and along the fencing there are piles of peoples poo and urinate all over. this is unacceptable the court should have better qaulity of a working environment inside and out their walls. Its just wrong.

The only problem is whether the government will actually upgrade the facilities an whether they care as we do not really know what they spend government funds on

Thabitha  said:

They really need to upgrade everything because from what I have read court conditions are very poor.

The record department is horrible you stand a whole day to get records only for them to just stamp the form and say they don;t have the file. As well it takes their typist 3 months to type court orders... most about 2 pages...

I think the state of all government buildings are so poor it is actually scary. Even worse is that the magistrate regional and district courts are in an even poorer condition then your high courts respectively and it is there where you will find the people that require the resources the most and are in dire need to the "resources" supposed to be available.
