South Africa behind Kenya and Nigeria

30% of the Kenyan and Nigerian population apparently already have access to the Internet, and whereas we, who pride ourselves in our belief that in many ways that we are “leading” Africa, only have 17%. There is no doubt that the Internet plays a huge role in encouraging business to grow, and the fact that we are so far behind when it comes to the Internet means that we are missing a trick or two when it comes to encouraging business and entrepreneurs in South Africa.

Our average internet connection speed is also very slow, with an average of 7.1 Mb per second in 2012 which apparently is only the 25th fastest Internet in Africa – and that is Africa, not the world. In the US the average speed is 31.5 Mb’s and apparently the global average is 16.6 Mb – so our speed is run at below half the global average. Again, it is not something to be particularly proud of, and this is an issue that the government really should be tackling and trying to ensure that we get everybody in the country, as quickly as possible, connected to the Internet, not only as a means of communication, but particularly from an educational and informative point of view.

I want to go insane when the internet is off or slow, we cannot do anything with internet nowadays. It is actually frightening.

At least we have the big five - all five of them - on one continent... We have Table Mountain, Kilimanjaro, and Kimberley se groot Gat too :-) Suppose the poachers might be spotted earlier if our internet were faster. Kenya??!! Seriously....

It is rather frustrating to have a slow internet service and it is absolutely shocking that we are behind a country like Kenya!! Internet has become such a huge part of life whether we like it or not so i think the service needs to be jacked up and fast!!!!

At least my sister will be benefiting in Kenya. Although she spent 5 hours in one of their hospitals getting an angiogram which didn't happen...... I guess in Africa you take what you take, then take a little more and forget about the give.

Maybe if there were competing companies it would get better in SA, but Telkom monopolizes as you need a Telkom line before you can get any internet service. The internet and telephone calls are way to expensive and the Internet will not get any progress without more people paying for it. Yet again another government issue. We truly have a pathetic government.

WOW only 17% I don't even know how people are working without the internet. I can't even manage one day without it. I depend on the internet all day everyday even at home.

I must say that South Africans tend to be much more slower technological wise than other countries so I am not shocked about our internet access percentage.

I mean simple things like kitchen or home appliances are also still so far behind from the rest of the world.

'What a Topic!' South Africans believe that we are leading Africa and sure we are proud of it. But what is said only 17% have access to Internet. Where are the encouragement? in business and entrepreneurs? That's why in the last decade our unemployment figures went up by 60% ,one of the highest in the world. If people are interested in learning, entrepreneurs and growing of the economy they will use the internet to find out know more about it. If they know more about internet the more people will get connected. Then they will moan about the speed and will ask the government to help. But tomorrow is another day! What a pleasure it would be if we South Africans can be proud of our Internet system

I have a 2gig line at home, which is actually not that bad, BUT, 31.5mbs!!! at that speed, before you even click on something, it has already downloaded.

South Africa is far behind in a lot of things. We might see that sort of connection when something even better comes out in the US.

I really think South Africa needs to concentrate on this issue. Every time I go overseas I cant believe what a proper internet connection makes to your life!

I founded in SA internet connection - very expensive and there is no right facilities to improve and make affordable for everyone internet connection. Not so many people can afford internet in the first place. I will give example Ukraine again, I used to pay for uncapped internet every month $15 which is R120.00, where you going to find this kind of price for internet?

Alexis  said:

That's the problem with SA - now isn't it - people do not seem to care what is available to make our country better, stronger and faster.
