Every now and then one reads an article that really blows your mind and I was going through an older edition, from earlier this year, of Wired magazine, when I read an article by Joshua Davis about John McAfee. McAfee formed McAfee & Associates some 25 years ago who made anti-virus software and was eventually bought by Intel in 2010 for $7,68 billion.
He then went to live in Belize and was most recently in the news when his beachfront compound burnt down on 16 May, and he said that the fire was not just a strange coincidence. He is busy working in Oregon at the moment on a novel about his life, and based on this article it is going to make for amazing reading. The journalist writes of his escapades with drugs, to the extent that after one of his intense drug trips he believes that the rest of his life has in fact all been a drug trip, and that one day he will wake up in the room where he took the drugs and it will all have turned out to be a dream. That is probably because in his 60s, while living in Belize where he thought he could get away from people who were trying to sue him in America, he decided to take on drug traders and other people he thought were not good for Belize.
After his dogs were killed, a neighbour, who previously threatened to kill them, turned up executed on a beach and the authorities in Belize want to question him about that. One of his five girlfriends that used to live in the compound appears to be a possible suspect, especially after she told the reporter that she would kill for him. She is 18 now, but became his girlfriend when she was sent to him as a 16 year old prostitute and he fell in love with her, ditching his girlfriend of the last 11 years. The relationship did not break up, when after a month or so, she decided to rob him and tried to shoot him in the head while he was sleeping, but missed and shot a pillow instead. He did however punish her by not allowing her to watch TV anymore and with time moved in other girlfriends, generally aged about 17 to 20 according to the reporter. By his own admission he spent his spare time on the Internet, trying to goad people into taking drugs that he does not believe in, saying that if he was to take drugs again, he would only take LSD or the finest cocaine. One sometimes wonders if being altogether is a requirement to becoming wealthy – he is certainly proof that the two don’t necessarily go together!

This is truly sad to see! He has lost his mind and now he wants to write about it. The saddest thing is that there is going to be people that says he is living a dream, while in fact he is wasting every second on drugs & young girls that are too stupid to realise they are throwing their lives away and they still want to kill for him??The money he is wasting could have given shelter to the homeless and food for the hungry. This is something to write about something that has changed the lifes of others and not about the bad life he is living.

I think he damaged his brains when he was taking drugs when he was young,at least it made him paranoid. I will read his book, if not written poorly it will be an interesting read .

I heard an interesting statistic on the radio a while back and that was that most of the worlds powerful, rich and influential business men and women are psychopaths.
At least his story is not a pretentious one, filled with the daily struggle and then sunshine, ponies and rainbows which are usually reflected in biographies. It is the real true story and you either are intrigued by it and want to know and learn more or you are repulsed by it. Either way I suppose it is a controversial topic.

Certainly not the kind of "boy" your father would want you to bring home. Toxic relationship at its best. Any dysfunctional and unhealthy relationship will inspire controlling behaviour, avoidance of feelings, intimacy problems, even ...the list goes on. This story embodies a person obviously so damaged on the inside that by taking drugs and living the life he chooses allows him to escape into the world of fantasy and become another person entirely. Deep down inside he might feel so filled with shame that he avoids reality and stays away from authentic relationships.

Crazy, crazy but entertaining. Crazy but "normal" people can be more insane than the committed. I will definitely read his book because, in line with his past behaviour, I hope it will be honest and different and lacking the pretention of those who have less than him. His lack of self-entitlement is what I admire

John McAfee is walking proof that you do get Jekyll and Hyde's. A good business brain on the one hand and a wasted brain on the other side. Was it a case of too much money too quickly and, to be that age, that kind of money and dating babies is a recipe for disaster. Who wants to be loved ONLY for their money?

WOW okay this guy should be put away, first off for dating girls half his age and younger and because he really has lost the plot in life. One thing in life I have seen for sure now is money makes people CRAZY and people like this shouldn't have access to so much of it. Shame banned from watching TV wow how does she live.

I can't believe that his punishment for attempted murder would be no more TV. SA's government should just not hear about this otherwise they might start getting ideas, seeing as we are so "great" at fighting crime

That is kind of level headed considering she was trying to kill him. But I agree with Tanya, it is kind of impressive but I cannot help but wonder what else he would have accomplished if he did not spend all that time in the outer stratosphere/wonderland.

Judging by what I have read, I would say that perhaps he was just lucky to find this break and indeed has some serious issues and problems to work through. Regarding the "punishment" of not allowing his could of been murderer, I would think that possibly he may have some deep psychological issues that need to be dealt with. Perhaps a psychologist instead of drugs??

Its sad to see such a brilliant brain go to waste. He has potential to do some great things but is just to caught up in the world of sex, drugs and money.
