This winter is different

Eskom has recently appealed to the public to do their best to save electricity during this winter. They say that this winter is different, because there are much higher levels of planned maintenance which need to take place – which would obviously imply that there will be less capacity.

Apparently in recent years we did not have such problems in winter because they have tried to do the maintenance during summer, but the problems now are such that they will have to do maintenance during winter. Electricity demand is at its highest from 5pm to 9pm and they will be asking people to switch off appliances during those hours. It is at times like this when one is grateful for the back-up power system at our offices which allows us to run for 3 hours without electricity. It is quite clear that this winter is going to be worse than recent years and no doubt it is going to be the trend for the next few years as well.

I agree with Sally it is ridiculous to ask us to switch appliances of between 5pm - 9pm I mean we switch all appliances of , the geyser, the stoves etc. during the day but when we get home we need hot water and we need to eat so where does that leave you? And on top of that we already had a few power failures&&.

There are so many people without electricity, and we still have people wasting power every day. I hope that some people will learn to save some power.

I think the public need to cooperate in saving electricity cause it is difficult without electricity

Sally  said:

We will not waste electricity but to ask from people to switch of appliances between 5pm and 9pm is ridiculous as that is peek time. We are paying fortunes every month for electricity but always there is another excuse.

Sheena  said:

Agreed with Bianca. There is not much we can do about this situation but do our part to save electricity.

As the consumers using electricity to give our homes warmth, to entertain us when it is too cold to go out and to provide us with comfort surely it is not too much to ask for that we get the goods and services that we pay for.

Surely if there wasnt a monopoly anymore that would be great! If there were reasonable contenders who could provide electricity, albeit gas powered, at least the consumer would have a choice.

At the moment we are stuck with 1 service provider and if the power goes out then oh well. Eskom has no notion of what healthy competition is. They are not challenged to become improved or better because there is no threat to losing business.

Imagine if there was another competitor on the market?

"Yes! If all people in South Africa stand together-(and help Eskom to do their maintenance )it would bea better place to live in" Surely we all, don't want to be without electricity during Winter!

I agree with Cornelie...there is more power failures than anything else.

Sundome  said:

Well it is time to save electricity and get more blankets. There is nothing we can do about it.

Cornelie  said:

It is every year the same just a different excuse. Why must we pay so much for electricity but half the time we cannot use it.

thembi  said:

The electricity price went up and Eskom should have used the money to maintain the power plant.

Apparently your geyser uses more power to re-heat (after it has been turned off the whole day) than it actually saves (during the course of the day when you turn it off). Not sure how factual this is. Some people really do leave lights on, my house mate is awful with this, and I keep reminding her. But there definitely are ways to save, but Eskom really should get its act together now

Cherise  said:

I will switch whatever needs to be switched off during 5pm and 9pm as long as I have my hot bath when I get home at 6pm and my electric blanket when I get into bed.

WOW guess another cold and dark winter for us are up ahead. YAY I love how the government takes care of the people.

I founded so tuff to go thru the winter in South Africa, Eskom every single year struggle to provide us with electricity. What could be the reason? Incompetent people who works in the company, who can not do the proper planning and budgeting for the year. How anyway government expect from us not to use electricity in the pick time, specially after paying huge municipality bills!!!!

Catherine  said:

During summer time one never hears Eskom mention anything to do with servicing the power station then but come winter that is the ideal time to do service. Year in year out the trend is the same. It is either Eskom never learns or government enjoys taking it's citizens for granted.

Is it terrible the we get such bad service for the money that we pay the government? Yes! Now stop complaining about it. There is an estimate 1.5 billion people in the world who truly live in 3rd world conditions. They have no electricity, no running water, none of the stuff we concider basic essentials. Quit moaning about the bad stuff in life and appreciate the good. We have a lot more that others.

Liesl  said:

Always everyone else's fault why they cannot smoke the pipe they fought for, for so long. I'm sick of their sorry excuses. Of course we will try and not waste electricity but 5 - 9 pm is the busiest time for any household.

Julie  said:

Did they not get some German dude in last year as well to "fix" what we could not fix??? Or was that for something else. No, sure it was Eskom.

Have you any idea how many people leave lights, geysers, heaters on 24/7? Take the mining industry - they provide housing - very cheap housing - water and electricity INCLUDED. They don't give a damn. Another friend of mine works for a well-known resort. They too are provided very affordable housing - water and electricity INCLUDED. I walk around during the day and keep switching lights off etc.!

Should there be load shedding, they have generators - not inconvenienced at all.

I'm talking thousands of people; thousands of households....

Angelique  said:

I would love to know why, why, why, maintenance cannot be done in Summer. It would be far more convenient as it stays lighter longer, we don't need to keep warm, we tend to eat less and go out more etc etc. Although it is time we all just switch off the appliances we don't use and stop being selfish thinking the 'rule' doesn't apply to you.

Bianca  said:
on Wednesday 19-Jun-13 08:21 AM
We are going to have to stock up on the blankets and battery controlled heaters! It is probably just one of those things that we need to endure, there is not much that we can do but compromise and lower our individual usage...

I feel for those who do not have electricity at all with this being one of the coldest winters, we all have to do our part but it doesn't get better and every year there is something else that needs to be sorted.
