The next petrol price increase may very well be decided by the currency, which is showing some strength at the moment. The problem though is that the international fuel price has now increased a little bit – costing approximately 36c a litre more, while the exchange rate is marginally positive. If the trend holds, and this blog is based on information available on 16 July 2013, then we are looking at an approximate increase of 35c per litre in August which will then take petrol to the highest price it has ever been in South Africa. Hopefully, before the end of the month the Rand will show some more strength and the international price of fuel will weaken a bit and we could then be looking, quite potentially, at a smaller increase than that.

There are two major factors influencing the price of petrol, the price of crude oil which escalate due to unrest in the oil producing regions and the R/$ exchange rate which is caused by the incompetent control by the South African government.

Increasing petrol prices will increase all our production prices that will lead to an increase in consumer prices.

Only the rich people will be able to make a living
Dear South Africans, this is your government, your backs are not yet broken as much as we had hoped, so here is another beating, bend over and take it!
Dear governement, OK. South African citizens.

I have no words. It just seems like it is always negative news, and we are constantly being sucked dry. What benefits have we as South Africans received in the last 20 years? NOTHING! Not even free medical or education! Everything has just worsened to crisis. Writing timidly about things like this makes it look OK. This is NOT OK! We are being messed around. A few advantaged individuals are enjoying the good life and the rest of us are suffering.

No shock, always going to continue to increase just so that can add to everything else increasing. People are struggling to get to work and hold jobs because of this as well. Very hard times....

This might just make moving closer to the office a viable option. Sigh ... And most of the new increase will probably go to the political hierarchy's new mansions and cars.

This absolutely rediculous because when the petrol goes up everything becomes expensive

Please guys do not make jokes if you will see my bicycle parked outside. The conversation about not even spend money on luxuries - cut off spending on food and pay petrol to get to work!!!

A comparison of petrol prices to daily wages finds that a litre of unleaded costs the average South African wage earner a striking 6.5% of their daily earnings. So roughly for every litre of petrol, R3.69 goes towards tax. This means that if you fill a 60 litre tank with petrol, R221.47 goes towards government taxes. These types of findings makes my blood boil when I read articles where millions of rands are spent by the government or government officials that are just not justified.

This is outrageous, my opinion remains the same though - cut out the unneccessary luxuries and suck it up... Unfortunate but if you do not have this approach, you will constantly be struggling. And on the positive side, when the petrol price decreases, you can enjoy the blessing of extra money!

When we went to visit my Grandparents in Zimbabwe a few years ago we thought it was funny to pay R13.00 a liter petrol now it is happening in our country, it is not funny anymore when is it going to stop.
