When one hears about programmes to sterilise the mentally unfit or the poor, one always thinks of Nazi Germany. In North Carolina in
America, the State has recently agreed to compensate people who were sterilised by their State’s Eugenics Programme. It ran from 1929 to 1974 – continuing even after all of the atrocities of the Second World War in Nazi Germany.
It has taken so long to agree on the compensation that three-quarters of the people who would be entitled to it have already died and the group that was meant to assist them, as a result of budget cuts, lacked the funds to do so. In many instances, there was actually nothing wrong with the people other than they were born into poor families and while men were also sterilised, 85% of those sterilised were women. One of the ladies leading the campaign, Elaine Riddick, said of her sterilisation, “They cut me open like I was a hog. What do you think I am worth? What do you think I am worth?”

Family planning is important you can't go and have 5 children if your income cannot support it, but this inhumane barbaric act, no form of compensation can ever reimburse a lifetime of loss and emotional sorrow these people must of suffered. I read an article on the One-Child policy in China. According to the article Family Planning Police force women to be sterilised for violating this policy and often these sterilisations are not performed by properly trained gynaecological surgeons and under sterile conditions causing infections and other complications then ensue. Woman have complained that their health was destroyed by these forced sterilisations. Words fail me.

When i was a kid i read a book called " a door away to heaven" by Steven King about eugenics movement or so called bio ethics. I was horrified to find out later that the movement was real and they are lots of people supporting eugenics .there was a Russian nurse(member of bioethics) cought for secretly steralising young girls who came to her clinic for abortions, she used acid to destroy their endometrium and make them sterile for ever and in 10 years damaged app 1000 young women .

I was just saying the other day, we spend so much time talking about history and trying to fix the past that our present is left to slide downhilll into a future where people will look back and talk about how horrific the past was. No end to the circle unless we actually fix today today!!!
