Best cities to live in

Around the world, and particularly in major countries, there are often lists produced of the best cities to live in. Other variations of these lists include the best cities to raise a family in, the best cities for young people, etc. We are a much smaller country, and that is probably why we have not seen such a survey, but one would find it very hard to imagine that any city other than Johannesburg, or potentially Pretoria, could win such a survey in South Africa.

Cape Town has a lot of natural beauty, but no really big business and Durban – well it just has the sea. Johannesburg certainly does not have too much in the way of natural beauty, but if you love the bush, the natural Highveld vegetation at this time of the year, particularly with the green trees and the brown grass really is very eye-catching for me anyway! We certainly have all the businesses, all the politicians, all the action, all the big sports finals, all the major sports teams, the Stock Exchange and basically everything of major importance that happens in South Africa from the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg to the various seats of power in Pretoria, happens within these two cities, 60 km apart.

Cape Town may have the beauty but Johannesburg has the people, the vibe and the best weather. I lived in Cape Town for a while and coming back to JHB was the best. Cape Town and Durban are fabulous over the holidays but then look who is there, the "vaalies". It is definitely the rat race that I love so much about Johannesburg.

I agree with Bianca.... In a heartbeat... But then again the job opportunities are here in JHB. It's alive and well.... It grows on you ;)

I must say if you have always lived in Johannesburg like I have, you would get annoyed at other places, I went to Durban last year for a holiday for the week and let me tell you, I was so annoyed by the end of it, at first I was like YAY it's so chilled, then when nearly all the shops closed at 3pm I was like what the heck is wrong with this place, I'm too use to the mall's and shops being open till 7pm and like being not limited to waking up early and rushing to the shops before they close. I was mainly annoyed by the fact that we had to drive half way accross Durban to find a pharmacy that was still open at 7pm we got there just in time.

I like Johannesburg. But neither Johannesburg nor Cape Town has a 2000 year old Boabab tree that you can climb and hug. :)

When I first moved to Johannesburg, I hated it so much. But surprisingly I have fallen in love with the city and whenever I go back to Cape Town for a week I miss Johannesburg so much. The only thing Johannesburg can't beat is the beautiful Table Mountain.

Who cares about what city is pleasant to live in when we the world is the most awful thing to be in. And whichever wonderful places we have presently will soon just be another security estate with a manmade pond.

Cape Town is stunning but as mentioned, the job opportunities are scarce. I don't really like Durban but I think Ballito is beautiful. I might not like the sea that much but there's always a Golf Course with an ocean view! I still love Jo'burg though!!!!

I like staying in JHB however I would move to Cape Town in a heartbeat if I could. Cape Town is so incredibly beautiful, although sometimes life feels very slow around there. I think I would love living there but I still think that I would miss the crazy, busy JHB.

We just have such an amazing country to live in - take away all the nonsense that we have to deal with. I will be retiring in Knysna though - best place i have been to so far - however i am sad to say that i have not explored the rest of the country as yet - on the list though

I have to say I love Cape Town, and have considered moving there before because my entire family lives in the Cape. However, for a young person trying to make a go at their career its pretty impossible to make a living. My love for Johannesburg has however grown again, and I agree that there is alot of beauty in Joburg. I love all the green trees as you drive along many of our roads. I think the fact that Johannesburg city central is being revamped is fantastic, places such as Newtown and Maboneng district, make Johanensburg rich with culture along with its natural beauty.

I would love to live in Cape Town. If only there was more business there it could be the best city to live in! Its beautiful, has the sea and is run by the DA! Which says alot itself!
