In a display of political openness we were recently told that Mamphela Ramphele is one of 71,000 South African dollar millionaires. In a report by Credit Suisse, it was estimated South Africa will have 240,000 dollar millionaires by 2016. A dollar millionaire is apparently an individual who has assets and liquid assets worth $1 million or more, excluding the value of their main home.
The SA Revenue Services, according to a report I read in the City Press, apparently have another definition of the ultra-rich and that is people who are worth more than R75 million, and on that basis Mamphela Ramphele with R55 million does not make the list. On SARS list of the super-rich there are apparently only 9 300 people in South Africa. One would assume that includes Dave King who recently settled a R700 million tax assessment with SARS. No doubt the 9 300 are subject to close scrutiny by SARS! Whether this in fact will work, in terms of her openness in getting votes, is another story, because most people are put off by wealth, but on the other hand we have a State President who, when he leaves office, will keep his house and we all know how much we paid for that!

She is rich that is why she is open about everything and I think she worked hard for her money.

She might not have made the list but she is still ultra-rich to the average Joe! If you earned your money then you deserve it! Its another thing if you have stolen and cheated the system to get your money, thats when it annoys me. When you use your power to steal and become wealthy - at the end of the day, its us as taxpayers money! I can only hope one day we have a new government who knows how to deal and work with our money wisely! Anything would be better than presidents spending ridiculously large amounts of money on homes for himself and a million wives and children to accomodate!

I agree with everyone on this one. I also think that public figures should be humble (ie: not flaunting their extravagant lifes) especially in a country such as ours where unemployment rates are so high. I hope that one day the money is actually distributed to the areas (such an unemployment) more effectively. I am tired of the flashy lifes of the public figures in this country, whilst im trying to give the odd R10 to the average joe on the street corner.

Yes, money is a huge deal in life, without it, you just cant live! But too much money could cause destruction in one's life. Money may put food on the table, give you electricity, put fuel in your car and pay your rent, but it cant buy love, friendship, joy and happiness as much as people think it might. I know a lot of wealthy people who have tons of money, but are so unhappy because they have no "REAL" friends, they have NO people skills and money controls them. I would love to be in a position where i am just comfortable and never be short or lack in anything, but loads and loads of cash, no thanks!! I would much rather bless others with what i have, but thats who i am.

I would like to see what her "budget" looks like, if she even needs one.

I agree with the general consensus - if you worked for it, it makes no difference.
However, if you are in a position of authority and your wealth is disproportionate to the salary earned there is a huge problem. And the people do see it.

I agree that if your wealth is gained through hard work that you deserve it and people who have worked hard and have reaped the rewards of being rich or wealthy do still understand and remember what it was like to struggle. Our president for example, is loaded and the majority of his people are suffering - this is a backward system..... It is extremely sad to see the luxury that he is surrounded with and at the same time see the poverty in our streets - irony!

I am glad I'm not that rich. Money can change people for the worst. You never know who wants to be your friend because of who you are or how much you earn. I just want to live an abundent life; enough to be comfortable and to bless someone else.

If you have worked hard for your money then you deserve every cent that you have - others should be stripped of what they have considering how they obtained it.

I think if you have worked for your money then you deserve it no matter how much it is or how people feel about it. I don't believe that a leader of a country should be so rich but his people are so poor. However, as one progresses up the hierarchy of power, you cannot have a president who instead of resolving issues about human trafficking, is worrying about how he will pay the rent this month.
