Norman Catherine

There is a Norman Catherine exhibition at Circa on Jellicoe Avenue in Rosebank. It runs until late October and I must say that I have always found his works of art most interesting and given that it is only 2 kilometres down the road from my offices, just off Jan Smuts Avenue, I will certainly attend. His work is not everyone’s cup of tea, but as the image alongside indicates, it is certainly different! The images range considerably, but often have an animated or cartoonish look or wildly bright and bold.

The one thing that I have always found fascinating about an artist is that their greatest fame appears to always be achieved once they are deceased and he no doubt will be very happy that he is very much alive, and his works are still commanding very good prices at auctions, in the hundreds of thousands, but it seems that everyone only really goes completely crazy about your work, pushing the price up into the millions, when you are no longer around to produce any more! It is incredible how many of the most famous artists made little to nothing while they were alive and yet now you could purchase whole suburbs, let alone a house, for the price of one of their paintings.

It is fascinating that deceased artists are the only artists who's names I know .And now I am aware of an artist whom very much alive. I think a deceased artist leaves a lot more room for speculation about the motives/reasoning behind a piece of art work. Which in my opinion is what this industry thrives on: trying to understand complex pieces of art. If the artist is alive to explain it, in my humble opinion it takes something away from the complexity of the art. In short guessing is fun especially when no one alive can tell you if your right or wrong .The mystery is where all the entertainment is. Obviously I am extremely interested in art lol.

I am not a fan of Norman Catherine's work however, there is one painting I like and it is called Dream Cloth. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy any of it as it is over the top expensive! but those who can afford it, should! Proudly South African

I love the painting above. It reminds me a little of "Where the Wild Things Are" - Maurice Sendak. :)

I love most art forms but especially oils. Circa often has good exhibitions so I will probably also attend for a quick peek on the way home

Norman Katherine happens to be one of my favourite artists! I cannot wait for the exhibition to start. About a year ago I bought my Norman Katherine print, unfortunately not able to buy the real thing yet!

seeing as I had no Idea who this artist was (just like most painters) I goggled to see the variety of paintings he has done if ever I do feel like going to an art exhibition it would defiantly be to go see his work, it is very 'random' - and also I think its the scarcity of the painter who painted the painting that makes paintings go up once the painter is no longer alive
