Lessons from Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson retired after 26 seasons as the manager of Manchester United.  He had an unprecedented record of success, taking over the managerial job at a time when Manchester United were expected to be demoted from the top division and leading them to a record number of successes over the years.  Manchester United of course is now an unbelievable brand name, thanks very much to the success of the Club during his leadership.  A lot of his theories, detailed in a recent management article, relate to any business and for example, he has always believed in getting talent young, training them, helping them move on and when they get too expensive for him he would sell them or allow them to go.

He does not believe in tolerating the superstar ego and believes that there is always a new superstar waiting in the wings, who will step up at the right time.  He also makes it very clear in the article that he is the boss and Manchester United was prepared, over the years, to let any player who challenged the balance of power in the Club, or his leadership, go straight away.  In one particular season they showed their leading goal scorer the door because he got too full of himself and that was disruptive to the team.  That of course is true of business as well and in many ways, because he did not actually coach the team on the field during their practices, he was more of a business and people manager than a coach – which is another reason why the key to his success relates to any other field as well.

A huge loss indeed. One cannot deny that he has been an incredibly successful manager and he has got many admirers throughout the world. I read in an interview that he said if a coach has no control that he will not last, which is completely true especially when dealing with millionaire footballers who all have some kind of ego! This applies in the work place too Everyone at the end of the day is replaceable if you have an ego or think you are more valuable than another. Another lesson from him would be that you point out your players mistakes right after the game, he wouldnt wait until Monday to do it. Same could apply to a manager/boss and then not criticize that person forever. Do it then and there! Finish!

I appreciate coaches who treat all players equally. it shows that stardom has not blinded them. They keep a clear head in all decisions and give promotion to those who deserve it, not those who think they do.

The lesson is a good one - and what he does is true - if there is no balance then it will never work

Are you working IN the bussiness or ON the bussiness, success can only come when you working On the bussiness, when you In the bussiness you dont have a clear picture because of the day to day things that are holding you down

I agree with Juliet ego gets employees nowhere, and that is definitely how a team or any employee is meant to be treated but also be credited for achievements or a job well done

Some people are born with skills they don't need to be trained to manage people he was good at what he was doing.

I have to admit that I do not follow football at all, but it seems that this man added greatly to the success of the team. One should however guard against using someone else's success story acquiescently without using proper wisdom that it does apply to your scenario

I like his no-nonsense attitude and a lot of his business principles. I agree in training young talent and that if someone is disruptive it is better they go to save the majority but am surprized of the recurring trend. Can't people see what happened in the past and learn from it? You have to be hard to be successful and also to be fair to those pulling their weight. Ego gets an employee nowhere.

Sir Alex Ferguson - my favourite man. Still extremely sad that he has retired. Although he sometimes used to throw boots at the players - whatever it took he did and it clearly worked. Truly inspiring man - as a MUFC supporter I can say that I am not too sure that he is extremely impressed with the team since he has left.
