I have, from time to time, purchased goods overseas and had them sent to me via DHL. DHL is such a brand name that we all seem to think in South Africa there is no other competitor and so we put up with shocking service. By that I mean service where once a package has cleared customs, DHL say that they still have to tend to certain paperwork, that they then don’t have drivers to bring the goods to you or, for example, that they have allegedly sent it to their Sandton branch. Their Sandton branch then says they don’t have drivers and the long and short of it is, in my dealings with DHL, instead of them delivering the goods to me which is after all the service that they advertise, I end up having to send a driver to their premises to go and collect my goods because otherwise it would take them 2 or 3 days, based on previous experiences, to actually deliver the goods to me.
I sometimes wonder if the American division of DHL is aware of how poor the service is in South Africa. I recently used FedEx, and the experience was way superior to anything I had ever experienced with DHL. I was asked to pay an invoice at about 10.30 am and after paying it and sending them proof of the payment, they sent a driver with the goods, not just to my office, which is closer for them, but the whole way to my house and it arrived about 5 hours after I had paid the custom duty. I will never be using DHL again where I have a choice.

Receiving the services you pay for nowadays is very rare. I've never dealt with DHL before but now i will be less likely to consider them at all

It sounds like FedEx service is far much good than DHL service

That is really shocking that you pay for a service but you don't get it at all.

I have never dealt with DHL or FedEx but from reading bad reviews, I most certainly will avoid DHL at all costs.

FedEx even promised to deliver my piano from Russia to South Africa , door to door in 2 weeks. I have not done it yet but they are only company who promised to deliver it while DHL said they cant deliver anything heavier than 50 kg and if my piano was 50kg it will take 4 months to deliver !

That is why competition is in existence.

I agree. Don't advertise that your company is 'all that', when it doesn't even live up to the expectations that they create with the adverts they make. Will recommend FedEx anytime.

Their service is really bad and if they don't have enough stuff why can't they hire

I have also never used either of them, but you are paying for services as advertised on tv, radio billboards etc, and it is frustrating, when they expect you to pay on time but they cant even deliver a proper service.

How can we rely on a service and trust that parcels sent, is going to be delivered at the relevant address as well as at the time allocated. The problem is that not even answering calls, leaves a very bad impression of their over all services.

I must say I have never used either yet but I will probably choose FedEx - if I ever need a parcel delivered to me. I must agree with Juliet, I have seen the FedEx truck quite a bit in Hollywood movies and I think it's an awesome way to advertise.

Wait, was that one FedEx exec not in a plane crash and ended up on the deserted island with nothing more than a ball for a friend? That was horrible.

I have never dealt with them but all franchises have their weak links and many competitors excel in their field of work it all comes down to who has the better staff and who works better, hopefully someone does lay a complaint so they can improve their services

I totally agree with Simone, we had to phone DHL a few time to find out why our documents has not been sent off, and firstly they never answer, and if they do you are transferred and then put on hold until the phone cuts out or until you hang up.

You would expect better from them with all their adverts everywhere telling people how great their service is. I think that's pathetic, if you claim you are the best, at least prove it too.

i know exactly what you mean. a couple of months ago i had a package delivered form CT to JHB. took them 2 days, and then i still had to fetch it on friday evening - the alternative would have been to wait for monday (another 3 days)... 2 days from CT to JHB??? probably faster to get something here from the UK than from CT...

Quite shocking at how bad DHL's service has gotten.

I agree and can confirm all of the above based on 1st hand experience! My sister worked for FedEx for many years. They are a good company. I think DHL just has not ironed out their processes at all. FedEx obviously also has enough money to have one of their trucks feature in the background of every Hollywood movie at least once during the movie. Good advertizing

I completely agree! Their call centre is a nightmare, you get shunted from 1 department to the other. To get any results one needs to lodge a complaint, which in the end delays everything. You then need to remind them of your parcel and an hour later phone to remind them to attend to your query. One does this the entire day for atleast 2 days. All their adverts are annoying and are a waste of money.
