Sandton gridlock

I often find the traffic along Jan Smuts Avenue or William Nicol in the afternoon frustrating, but it is nothing compared to Sandton.  If you have the bad luck to have to attend a meeting, or be leaving Sandton anywhere between 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm, the traffic is absolutely gridlocked and a very short drive can take a considerable time.  I managed to travel 7 kilometres from Rosebank to the advocates’ chambers in Sandton in 35 minutes recently and that is pretty much average running speed.  That is undoubtedly far worse than the traffic anywhere close to my offices or on my route home!  The worst part is that the vast majority of that time was spent covering three or four blocks in Sandton at a rate which is far slower than any taxi could drive you around a city with 8 million people living in it, namely New York City.

I worked in Sandton while I was still studying and I must say the traffic was so horrible that I eventually renegotiated my hours so that I was at the office just after 6 and could leave by 3. I don't know why people think its such a great place. overrated, overpriced and way too crowded.

i love the sandton traffic. it is stationary, and as every motorcyclist knows, an accident with a stationary car requires 100% input from your side.

i have thought about it a bit, and i think people in sandton have love affairs with their cars. why else would anyone be prepared to sit in on all day, in the blazing sun???

I have not experienced Sandton traffic first hand but I know that I can always expect a sigh or two when I send people to appointments in Sandton at the busiest time of the day. Traffic is not my favourite but it is one of those things that is just life....

Worked in Sandton for many years. You make provision for at least two hours in the morning to not be late for work. The one evening on the way home from work there was 13 car pile up - sat in traffic for over 6 hours.

This kind of traffic is a daily experience for us Southerners. If I come in on a weekend, it takes me 15 minutes, during the week anything from 45 min - 1 hour.
We cannot do underground tubes, why not a monorail servicing the whole of JHB area. I would certainly use same.

Worked in Sandton for 8 months. Arrived at work at 6am and left 7pm to avoid traffic. Nightmare but William Nicol not any better averaging minimum 2 hours travelling time per day

The traffic coming to work and going back home everyday is bad enough. I'm ok with Sandton thank you and very much grateful that that is not the route I take home.

Ok traffic is nobody's favorite thing. Especially when you just want to get home ...

I am not a fan of traffic and would not like to work in Sandton or have meetings there. It is a nightmare. It's just like JHB CBD - you will never catch me driving there. With traffic everyone is irritated and it is more accident-prone!

I hate traffic and especially people with road rage. I can't imagine what it must feel like to travel that road every single day after a long day at the office.

Our Government should spend a little more money on improving the roads and less of building e-toll structures all over, maybe an extra lane or two might help the flow of Traffic...

Clearly the roads were not built to accommodate the amount of cars. As well having bad drivers on the road doesn't help. Especially if all you want to do is get home after a long day at work

Let's just all move to New York. But seriously, I cannot handle the traffic in Sandton. It best to arrange appointments at about 2pm otherwise you get stuck in the gridlock which is a nightmare. I am pretty happy that our offices are not in Sandton for this reason! But, back to New York, can we go yet?
