Something in the air

It is hard to separate the booing of President Jacob Zuma at the memorial service of Nelson Mandela, from what is going on with the e-tags.  They definitely appear to be linked to a general dissatisfaction with the way things are in South Africa at the moment.  That however can be said in many countries around the world at many times, and there is only one thing that counts and that is how people vote.  I would be surprised if we see election results next year that are any different to the results of previous years.  Perhaps we will see 2% or 3% of votes taken away from the ANC and going to smaller parties, but I don’t believe that the vast majority of our people are going to, because they are upset with e-tags, suddenly now start voting for the Democratic Alliance or some new party.  If they don’t, then there is not much one can argue about – if you elect the same people year after year, and they make decisions that you don’t like, then you will simply have to abide by them.  One gets a chance every five years to choose new leaders and you cannot on the one hand vote for the same people and on the other hand continually boycott their proposals.  The problem for the other political parties is that it is only the ANC who has struggle credentials and I think most voters will ultimately vote on that basis and not on the basis of a R200 million house or e-tags or all the various other issues that have so infuriated people recently.  If the ANC is returned to power with its usual majority, they will also do so then with a sense that regardless of what decisions they take, they will remain in power and so, just like Zimbabwe before us, it is an interesting phase that we are going through and I think it is probably still too early for people to forget that it was indeed the ANC who liberated South Africa, but one thing is for sure, if they continue their unpopular policies, then they will have more embarrassing results than just the booing that we saw of Jacob Zuma in years to come.

There is no excuse for the president's mismanagement of the country.

If only we had a President like Her Excellency Dr Joyce Banda, President of Malawi. In all honesty I did not know who she was until I saw her pay her condolences to Tata Madiba at his funeral. Her words, her actions were by far the most thought and emotion provoking between the lot. She seemed far more sincere. She puts our President Zuma to shame.

She sold their presidential jet for $15-million, using this money to avert the food crisis in her country. Banda dissolved her entire cabinet because of the corruption, this which Zuma has failed to do. Instead Zuma uses public funds as his personal piggy bank.

What the majority party is failing to do is to bridge the gap between the rich and the poverty stricken people of South Africa.

I agree with Kaylee, we have a vast majority of the "uneducated vote", the blind leading the blind in fear of being oppressed again. However we also have a new generation splashing onto the scene who are much more socially and politically aware. Here is to hoping.

Every vote counts.

I do not believe that the booing of JZ at the memorial was the correct platform however I do believe that it was certainly a way to inform the world that those booing or the country is not happy with who our president is. I think that in the near future, the ANC will do something as they will without a doubt, lose votes next year as a result of the recent "scandal" around our president. I do hope though that people will open their eyes and vote differently if they are so incredibly unhappy.

I agree with Lorette but if people vote for the ANC again they shouldn't complain they must suck it up because that's the choice they have made

If we think about it, most of the people voting for the ANC, don't even have houses and don't even talk about cars... so to them it doesn't matter to buy an e-tag, because they won't need it... People will continue voting the same as they have before.

Seems like given enough time our country might just follow the same route brought to us by "His Excellency, President for Life Robert Mugabe".

Like Zimbabwe we are run and majority inhibited by complete idiots riding on the bandwagon of a struggle they were never even a part of.

ANC will get the majority votes, that is a given, because like you said it was the ANC who liberated our country. I personally think that Jacob Zuma needs to resign as president as it is clear that he's focus is not his country but of course his personal well being. I personally think Cyril Ramaphosa should take over presidency as i think he will make more of a difference and he will fight more for a better South Africa. But only time will tell what lies ahead and I really hope that things will change for the better and fast.

I personally think that the ANC will win again this year. People will be asked to vote for Nelson Mandela.

It is a pity that the ANC are doing these things and that the majority of South Africans will probably continue to vote for them at the elections.
